Every aspect of the NPCs changes according to the level your are when you meet them, so I suppose this does as well. Can't detail something that is different for everyone...

well, in the beginning when you meet korgan he has 5 in axe and 1 in hammers, he will then gain points in hammers if you meet him at a later stage.

There's plenty of information that changes with level for NPC's, but everything else is detailed (HP's would be an example) except for proficiencies. Slightly annoying.

[IMG] Grrr... He asked for proficiencies...

First, you need to understand that first time you get a particular NPC in the party - his/her abilities are determined according to your level.
For details on that ask Slappy, I remember he was talking about Viconia's abilities related to your hero's level...

Anyway, here's a list of NPCs and their weapon proficiencies plus those that are bonus according to your level:

    Aerie

    Mace +
    Quarter Staff +
    Sling +

Club + (only if you are level 7 or higher)

    Anomen

    War Hammer +
    Mace ++
    Sling ++
    Sword and shield style +

Quarter Staff + (only if you are level 10 or higher)

    Cernd

    Scimitar +
    Dagger +
    Quarter Staff +
    Sling +

Single weapon style + (only if you are level 13 or higher)

I'm not sure, but it seems that if you're level 14 or higher he gets also + in all these: Large Sword, Small Sword, Bow and Missile Weapons?!

    Edwin

    Dagger +
    Quarter Staff +

Sling + (only if you are level 12 or higher)

    Haer'Dalis
    Short Sword ++
    Dagger +
    Dart +
    Two weapon style ++

Long Sword + (only if you are level 13 or 14)

Long Sword ++ (only if you are level 15 or higher)

    Dart +

    no bonus

    Quarter Staff +
    Sling +
    Sword and shield style +

    no bonus

Yep, the NPCs have a different template depending on the level of your lowest party member when you meet them (so if you want to get the max ask all lower level members to leave the party and stay put, recruit them again after you have recruited the new member). The templates for each character can be viewed using Infinity Explorer. Remember though that each has a maximum level (usually about 12) no matter what level you have reached. The link is:
    http://www.sorcerers.net/community/threads/npcs-quests.7719/

However, most of the link is irrelevenat so I'll cut and paste the relevnt stuff for you:

'I'm not completely sure about that (NPC being the same level as you when you first find them). I know this has always been the percieved wisom but.... I was looking through character details using the Infinity Explorer Programme (yes I have too much time on my hands. If you have too, look at the editors section of this site) and I noticed that there are a number of different files for each NPC. These seem to represent the stats they will have at various levels and most only seemed to go up to about level 12 (I think - knew I should have made a note). So, don't be surprised if you come back to a NPC at the end of the game and he/she isn't level 18 (or whatever). Please feel free to corect me on this. In fact, hang on....
OK, I've just opened up the editor (look under creatures and you'll see what I mean).

    Aerie level 11
    Anomen Level 10
    Cernd level 13
    Edwin level 13
    Haer'Dalis level 15
    Jaheira 12
    Jan 12
    Keldorn 12
    Korgan 12
    Mazzy 12
    Minsc 12
    Nalia 15
    Valygar 12
    Viconia 13

Of course, this doesn't prove that they won't be at a higher level if you recruit them later in the game. It might be that Bioware just scripted the first few levels to balance game play. Has anyone else definately recruited an NPC late in the game (without having talked to them before) and found they had a low experience rating? (I seem to remember getting something similar in BG1 when I had to replace a NPC that I couldn't resurrect).

Based on a discussion in another thread, I thought it was time to check this. Using a party of level 17 to 19 characters I went to save Viconia from the stake. This was the first contact with her in the game (I had deliberately avoided her in case I needed her later). When I recruited her she was level 13 with 120,000 experience. Checking infinity explorer again it looks like this 120,000 is the maximum for all the NPCs except Imoen and Yoshimo (who are special). The multi and dual class are lower but that reflects the expereince in other classes.'

Guys, seems that Tal is interested in info on all NPC versions that you can get according to your level.

I'm too lazy to analyze it, so I'll explain how you can find it out from the game. Explanation of hex editing stuff I'll leave for another life, if you're not into that already forget it. Here you'll see the usage of another methods...

    Step One

Three things you need to prepare:
    1. A dozen or two of blank sheets of paper and pen/pencil
    2. Enable the Console in the game
    3. Start the game - a new one or load an old one, doesn't matter.

    1. Hmmm, can't help you there, you'll have to buy those on yourself...

    2. In your BG2 folder there is a file "Power Users.txt" with exact description how to enable the Console. Just search the keywords "debug" and "console"...

    3. Do I need to spam about this too?

    Step Two

    1. Kill all NPCs in the party (not your hero, silly). It is not hard, just put the pointer over the NPC or over his/her portrait and then press CTRL+Y.

    2. Press space to force pause mode. This may look not necessary, but some NPCs react on your presence (i.e. Aerie) and you don't need their annoying dialogs.

    3. Spawn all possible versions of one NPC by using the spawning creature command with NPC list (details are below).

    4. Get all NPC versions in the party - put the pointer over the NPC then press CTRL+Q.

    Step Three

    1. Choose screens of interest with left icon bar or quick keys for all NPC versions (record, inventory).

    2. Make use of those papers you prepared (write down NPC info, don't use it as toilet paper).

    3. If that was not info on last NPC return to Step Two, otherwise proceed on Step Four.

    Step Four

    1. Quit BG2. What a relief! For a bit more relaxation engage tetris or solitaire or get on the boards to spam a bit (*evil grin*)...

    2. Make new text file and type in it all NPC info you found - but do some editing, you don't need to type the same things more than once and brief data is the best data.

    3. Zip the file and mail it to Tal.

    Epilogue

If you're the first one that sent NPC info to Tal and he finds it interesting and well done, he'll put it on pages and you'll be granted with "protection from leveldrain on boards" for next few days... ;)

Besides that, some recent rumor says that Tal is implementing new leveling system on the boards... With special levels for games info contributors!
This is just a rumor, don't start pestering Tal with spams like: "Is it true? I've got some interesting info to mail...". Be serious.

    --------------------------------------

    Spawning creatures from the Console

To spawn an creature from the Console you have to use command:
    CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("X")

Instead of X you need to put exact creature code, i.e. to spawn a courtesan you'll type in Console:
    CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("BPROST1")

Since creature codes are not case sensitive you can also get her with:
    CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("bprost1")

Finally, before the whole NPC codes list, you need to understand the NPC level rule. It means that regarding to your hero's level in regular game you'll get particular version of NPC with more or less abilities when you get him/her in the party for the first time.

All creature codes for NPC versions have a number after the name. That number says what min level your hero must be to get that version of NPC.
Let's see that on Aerie versions.
There are AERIE7 and AERIE9. If your hero is level 7 he gets AERIE7. If your hero is level 8 he also gets AERIE7. But if your hero is level 9 he gets AERIE9 in the party. Understand?
But then there is AERIE6 that you get if you're level 6. Now you ask, what if I'm level 5? In that case when there's no NPC version with number lower or equal to your level, you get first NPC version - means if you're level 5 or lower you get AERIE6.
A special note must be made about Cernd - it seems that his version if you're level 14 or higher is CERND13B, however I never actually checked that in real game, so experiment.

Anyway, that's what happens in regular game. Here you'll spawn all versions and get them in party with CTRL+Q so your hero's level won't possibly mess up NPC versions.

    NPC creature codes list

    Name: versions' creature codes

    Aerie: AERIE6, AERIE7, AERIE9, AERIE10, AERIE11
    Anomen: ANOMEN6, ANOMEN7, ANOMEN8, ANOMEN9, ANOMEN10
    Cernd: CERND10, CERND12, CERND13, CERND13B
    Edwin: EDWIN7, EDWIN9, EDWIN11, EDWIN12, EDWIN13
    Haer'Dalis: HAER10, HAER11, HAER13, HAER15
    Imoen in 1st dungeon: IMOEN6, IMOEN10
    Imoen2 later in the game: IMOEN211, IMOEN213
    Jaheira: JAHEIR7, JAHEIR8, JAHEIR11, JAHEIR12
    Jan: JAN8, JAN10, JAN11, JAN12
    Keldorn: KELDOR8, KELDOR9, KELDOR10, KELDOR12
    Korgan: KORGAN8, KORGAN9, KORGAN11, KORGAN12
    Mazzy: MAZZY8, MAZZY9, MAZZY11, MAZZY12
    Minsc: MINSC7, MINSC8, MINSC9, MINSC10, MINSC12
    Nalia: NALIA8, NALIA10, NALIA11, NALIA13, NALIA15
    Valygar: VALYG8, VALYG9, VALYG11, VALYG12
    Viconia: VICONI6, VICONI8, VICONI9, VICONI11, VICONI13
    Yoshimo: YOSHI7, YOSHI8, YOSHI10, YOSHI11, YOSHI12

    --------------------------------------

    Final note
Yes, I could do all of this by myself and post the whole info or mail it to Tal. However, I'm not planning to visit these boards as often as I was and also there are two another games I'm interested in (Arcanum and Torn) and when they get released I'll move to the boards about those games.
From time to time I'll get here just to check PT forum of course...

Because of that I'm putting here one possible method to find some deep game info, just in case I'm not around and someone asks something that needs this stuff and doesn't know how to engage it...

To quickly get all creature codes I used hex editor to search thru "default.bif" file - you won't do that of course because you can see it also from Infinity Engine Explorer (the script is called NPCLEVEL).

    Disclaimer
DO NOT ACCUSE ME if you use Infinity Explorer to write down NPC versions info - with that utility you can see only base stats for NPCs, not derived ones, i.e. HP.
