It's a pretty hot topic in social media and media in general. The groups of people who are anti-vaccination seem to be growing and the conflicts are getting ugly. I figured it was worth a discussion here. I'm strongly pro vaccination.

    I'm decidedly anti vaccination.

Because the world is already overpopulated enough. :p

Vacs for my kids. I usually don't get them myself. Every time I get the flu shot I get the flu. The last two years I skipped it and voila! No flu.... Could be luck. Or not. Who knows....

Darwin thinks this problem will sort itself out. I hope sooner than later to reduce collateral damage.

Isn't it obvious that vaccinations work. We basically eradicated many diseases until these morons came around.

I'd probably get my kids vaccinated if we ever have any. I'll not take flu shots, though. They just seem to get you ill for no apparent benefit.

I'm an Analytical chemist. I believe in scientific evidence not some pseudo scientific <Insert appropriate swear word here>

All the anti vaccination promoting morons should just move to some deserted island where they can't infect anyone else.

And any with children should be prosecuted for child neglect.

    Problem solved ;)

All the anti-vaccination promoting morons probably had all their vaccinations long ago, though. It's mostly their kids that will be subject to this anti-vaccination sentiment, I assume.

Or are they actually saying that they're anti-vaccination for rabies and malaria when they go on a holiday to some tropic destination as well?

As Ron White says, "You can't fix stupid."

Unfortunately, it is often the children who pay when the parents are stupid.

But, but, but . . . wait -- Jenny McCarthy and John McCain say it causes "teh autism." Aren't we going to believe them over, say, people with actual scientific backgrounds and medical degrees? Why not? Why are you all looking at me that way . . . ?

(My kids got vaccinations and I think the people who are against it are friggin' loons that shouldn't have kids.)

I would think the pros greatly outweigh the cons when it comes to that whole autism argument. What are the odds of actually getting autism for a
Vac? It's about the same as not getting the vac....

Have you seen kids these days? I think it's fair to say that most people shouldn't have any. They can't even raise dogs right, much less kids. :shake:

I can understand the hysteria especially since it's always accompanied and encouraged by random influential people no matter where you're coming from, some even with various quasi-medical knowledge. The problem today is that we're so bombarded with conflicting information on just about every issue that it takes some time & effort to make an intelligent decision even about things that should be no-brainers. There are plenty of conspiracy theory believers out there and this percentage of the population is especially prone to believing that vaccinating their children will make them autistic. To be honest, I'm sure that a very small percentage of vaccinated children actually is quite likely to have life-long problems due to it... but I doubt that the percentage is much higher than that of those with severe reactions to any other medicine. Not to mention the consequences of actually catching many of the diseases that we're vaccinating against, which can result in crippling for life and even death.

As has been mentioned already, the benefits simply outweigh the potential downsides by so much that you can't rationally support not inoculating your children. Not in the least because you're not only endangering your own children if you ignore vaccination but all the others that they came in contact with as well.

Thank god you lot are level headed. I made the mistake to debate with a bunch of anti-vaxxer morons on FB. I was just going to ignore it. I really was. But there just comes a time when you get so fed up by some conspiracy theorists propaganda that you can't stand it any more. It's been keeping me up at night it pisses me off so much!

These people keep quoting sources that have no legitimate scientific foundation. You ask them to find another source and they just find another BS site with more quasi-science to support themselves.

    ---------- Added 0 hours, 5 minutes and 19 seconds later... ----------

BTW there is also a lot of legitimate information out there that suggest that some adults who were inoculated as children may no longer be immune. I was born in a particular time period where we were only given one dose rather than two. I checked into it with Canada health and it was suggested I get reinoculated. So if I die tomorrow or suddenly become autistic then the anti-vaxxers were right ... wish me luck :D

Pro-Vac. Some people don't vaccinate because they may actually have an allergy to something in the vaccine. I sympathize with them and would set the aside for obvious medical reasons-which is why it is more important for those people who aren't allergic to get vaccinated.

Oh there are definitely reasons to NOT get vaccinated. Like you said, a small percentage of people are allergic. Or have a suppressed or otherwise compromised immune system. Or are too young (in the case of the recent measles outbreak, children under a year old aren't vaccnated yet). But if you just don't want to get your kid vaccinated because you think it causes autism? Doesn't work for me. That argument goes into the same bin as "organic" foods, and the most recent fad, the anti-GMO craze.

I would love to hear what the Founding Fathers would have to say about the state of their country and people in modern days.

Well, if you want to loose a bit of hope for humanity I guess here you go.

About 9-10 minutes in he gets to blaming vaccines for autism and then connects it to conspiracies to control population size.

I'm not sure he is old enough to be out of college.. but I've met much more aware college students so I don't think this is an age issue.

Even managed to include the phrase "death panels" around minute 13.

I hope this isn't serious but..

Well... I wouldn't dump the organic group in with the antivaxxers. Not wanting to eat food that was sprayed with a pesticide seems like a logical choice IF money isn't an issue for you. I wash my fruit and veggies before eating them. I don't eat foods with sugar substitutes...aka Aspartame. But I don't eat "organic" when eating out. I buy regular meat from the store. I even indulge in a Big Mac every once in a while. :) Many people aren't sure about what organic even means and not informed to fully understand what organic labels representing as opposed to eating healthy.

Antivaxxers are in denial. Measles has hit my area. My kids are protected. I couldn't imagine how we would feel if the got something bad because we didn't vaccinate.
