    Heya,

Does anybody know where I can find a download link for Wizardry 1 (yes, we're talking 1981) on PC and an emulator if applicable.

    Thanking you.

I like Retro...but this is way too Retro for me. :D
    W1 is already abandon-ware:
    Get it here:
    Link-me-to-Wizardy

You'll need DoxBox emulator for that one.

Since there is no pre-made config for W1-DosBox...you have to do the setup yourself.
    Here's how:
To DoxBox & W1 install instruction.
Follow the easy to understand instruction and good luck on the proving grounds.

    Thanks.

I actually finished it back in the day. I wondering just how cringe-worthy it's going to be!

Thanks once again for this. Been seriously grinding it. Mapped the first six floors, have wandered around the final floor, but not yet fought Werdna (the boss guy for those who didn't play it).

This is actually not the original version. I think it's the IIC version (improved graphics, less rutheless game play) not the IIE version. Never-the-less I'm quite impressed. It actually has a quirky Minecraft quality. Perhaps I'm just being generous for nostalgic purposes. The game play is great. But may not be for newer gamers who can't handle, like you said, how old this really is.

My biggest gripe is that you can't full screen it (durrr!).

I guess the best comparison would be like watching 'Forbidden Planet'. Some people couldn't stand it, others would enjoy it for what it is - a piece of pop-culture heiritage.

    Game on.

Glad to hear you got it to work.
A feat in itself these days with modern OS and Nostalgia-ware.

I personally never played W1. Therefore I couldn't tell about the different releases.
    W3 was my first.
But I do get what you mean. Gameplay is top. Even by todays standard.
Without worrying much on graphics, game-maker focused on more gameplay and delivered.

    Well then...game on.

    :)

You should of had to beat Wizardry 1 in order to play Wizardry 2. You should of had to beat Wizardry 2 in order to play Wizardry 3. You can't start at Wizardry 3.....

They are the same IIRC. W3 was just another scenario.

Interesting. I first played this game on my Apple II+ in or around 1983 I think. Not sure I could play it again. I remember multiple deaths on the first level. It took a lot of work to level up those characters.

Well, I beat Wiz 1 the other night. Accidently set off a teleporter with my way under-powered party and landed right outside Werdna's door with no way home. Had to fight

With a combination of skill, determination and a smattering of luck (managed to silence him with a 2nd lvl silence spell for two rounds - incredible) I defeated Werdna. Took a few attempts.

As for taking characters through the Sequals. If I recall correctly:

    - Yes, low level chars can be infuriating in Wiz 1 because they die so easily. Quite a deterent for new players.

    - Can only play Wiz 2 by importing lvl 14 chars or higher from Wiz 1

    - Chars can be created in Wiz 3. However, imported chars from previous were reset to lvl 1 but allowed to keep prestige classes if reached and given higher stats than freshly created chars.

I gave Wiz 2 and 3 a good smashing back in the eighties but never actually finished them. A glitch in Wiz 1 caused my Ninja to loop level up and reach about level 240!!! Hahaha.... Just him and a priest side-kick owning the dungeon. Good times.

    Yeah I remember now.
In W3 the Chars were treated as descendants of the Heroes from W1 & W2.

A nice mechanic. Our D&D-DM used a similar approach for our sessions.

You may be correct. I was given the original disks back in the day as gifts. I am certain that you could create chars in Wiz 3. I would note that none of the versions of I, II or III I have found online are actually the 'original' versions. EG: there is no 'Recover Character' option in any of these versions. That was a standard on the originals. Versions I found have a 'Restart Party' option. Meh, not really import except for useless trivia commentary.

In the Wiz 3 I found online for Dosbox (thanks Darion) there is no option for creating characters. So everybody is probably correct from whichever version they happened to obtain.

PS - The 'original' graphics on 1 and 2 were ever more simple than the graphics for the abandonware versions!

Might I say- damn Wiz 3 is infuriatingly hard. I'm sure the difficulty of the game left a lot of players extremely dissatisfied!

Back in the day when the Part II and Part III were released, you had to import characters. There was no option for making characters. Part IV, the Return of Werdna, put a stop to that sequence. Part V - the Legacy of ... was the descendant scenario.

I do believe you are correct. Thanks.

Now I recall that when I got Wiz III I was happy that you could only use characters from previous versions. What made me happy was that I had slaved my was through the previous two games and no idiot could buy part III and claim they were awesome because they solved it. It totally validated all persons who had bought previous versions.

Now, the cynical side of me says what a masterstroke of marketing strategy. Anyone who bought Wiz III could not play it unless they purchased (obtained) a copy of at least Wiz I. Pre Bill Gates ;)

The other side of me says, 'well, after Wiz II there was really no-where for the game to go. Resetting characters to LVL 1 was an intelligent and creative idea.'

    Sir, I stand corrected.
