Griving testimony to my incorrigible and persistent obsession with everything Orban, I return from lurkdom to post on the latest news from blissful Orbanistan at the Danube!

In the past, the Hungarian supreme court has brazenly meddled in politics, impertinently second guessing the deep wisdom of Fidesz and the sainted Victor Orbán. This den of Hungary hating Hungarians habitually spewed craven lies and vile slander by claiming unconstitutionality of laws and actions of the former (and generally being a dour spoilsport) - thinly disguising their true motives under the pathetic pretext of "judicial independence":
Alas, no longer they will be allowed to be the skunk at the picnic:

As I understand it from a previous post from another member here, "... the poor Krugman went mad, and started to post/forward nonsense that he knows jack about." ;)

BTW, long time no see Rags! :) You should stop by more often.

It may seem like they are trying to override the courts and have an executive dictatorship, but all the people I know from Hungary support it. Hey, it's their government.

People do, think and say foolish things all the time.

There was this guy in Russia, after the fall of the USSR, who went to a factory and found some stuff, and found out to his delight that it was warm, just by itself, so he put it under his bed to sleep comfortably in those cold Russian nights. They found that out when he went to the doctor because he felt very sick and because he had lost weight and hair and all that, and died, frankly. Apparently, it wasn't that good an idea after all.

Why would you dredge this up? Honestly!? I don't know anyone here who cares about Orban other than . . . . we all know who . . . . and the subject has been resting nicely for so long now!

Orban will not last forever -- the negative results of his policies will catch up to him and he'll end up powerless. So let sleeping dogs lie!

Nah, I won't do that. Your view is America centric, no offence. In Europe Orbán and what he does to Hungary is some kind of a deal. People look at Hungary and shake their head at watching them slip into an Eastern Europe equivalent of a banana republic. It's a sad thing to watch.

OK, but I think LKD's point was more along the lines of "Why do you care?"

Or, to put it another way, seeing as how you don't live in Hungary, why do the decisions of the Hungarian people matter so much to you? Is there some ripple effect - economic or otherwise - that the politics of Hungary will have some negative side effect that will bite the German people in the ass down the road?

The Hungarians I know use their EU citizenship as a way to find work elsewhere. They can do that, and do it a lot. The freedom to work everywhere in the EU is a European citizen's right. One of the unconstitutional laws Orbán enacted compelled graduates of Hungarian universities to stay in Hungary, if they took a government loan. Completely leaving aside Hungarian law, Orban's law obviously violates that right. I don't know which exact argument the court made, but they are compelled to take into account European law when interpreting their constitution (how that would rub Orbán the wrong way is easy to see, not just the court but Europe also second guessing him, on pesky legal grounds). About all the 'controversial things' that Orbán and his Fidesz people have enacted are like that example.

My Romanian Hungarian colleagues use their Hungarian passports not to enter Orban's Hungarian's paradise but to move freely in the EU. In that sense, the worse it gets, the more talent will flee from Hungary, leaving it barren. Often these people then try to find work in Germany, probably to the great puzzlement and disappointment of the Trianon revisionists who'd rather wanted to see them strengthen Hungary's demographic base (to wit: iirc Orbán issued Hungarian passports to Hungarian's living in Slovakia and Romania, territories Hungary lost after WW-I when the Treaty of Trianon dismembered the Austro-Hungarian empire).

That aside, you Americans aren't the only ones who have values. We simply don't like to see Hungary move away from core European values like independence of the judiciary, freedom of the media etc. pp. - just for starters.

Before I set on to worry, for instance about Syria, because Assad is so bad, I worry about bad developments in my neighbourhood first. Hungary is a mere 1.000 km away from me, less than the distance between Florida and Washington D.C. You do care about domestic US politics? In caring about Hungary, I do care about EU domestic politics, and I do care about EU citizens being able to enjoy their rights.

I once knew a guy from China, very nice guy. We started talking about politics one time and I was surprised that he ardently defended the Chinese government. I couldn't help but have a moment of deja vu.

Of course, but I worry far less about Mexican politics, and I'd say that the number of people leaving Mexico to come to the US dwarfs the number of Hungarians coming to Germany.
