Indonesian Death Penalty for Drug Smuggling UK Grandmother

    I think it comes down to whether or not you believe her. If it is true that she was only attempting to smuggle the drugs in because of threats against her family, then it's hard to find why she was even convicted. If she was actually trying to smuggle drugs into the country, then while the sentence is extremely harsh, you can't say it isn't appropriate (or at least consistent), as most of the people on death row in Indonesia have been convicted of drug crimes.

    That said, they said the appeal process can take many years, and regardless of whether she's eventually sentenced to death or "only" 15 years in prison, she'll likely spend most of (if not all) of the rest of her life in prison.

    [​IMG] Got a page not found here, but no, the UK doesn't have a death penalty - hasn't done for quite a long while.

    Whilst there is a risk of having to suffer the penalty of breaking the law in another country there is also the risk of being able to prove if there are extenuating circumstances. If she is telling the truth about threats then hopefully there can be another resolution to the case than the currently proposed penalty.

    Indonesia has always been really tough on drug smuggling. Ask any Australian and I'm sure they'll be able to list a pile of Aussies who have faced the death penalty for smuggling drugs in Indonesia.

    The woman's from a place near me and, apparently, has a reputation for doing drugs (amongst other things), and I seriously doubt her family was in any danger at all.

    We don't have the death penalty here but that doesn't mean that we should be allowed to escape it if we break a law in another country that does use it.
