What kind of wheels do you drive?

2007 chevy 2500hd for fun & moving things, god I love my truck. Wish I could drive it everyday but with gas like it is, weekends only. A 2003 kia rio for the drive to work & longer trips.

 

I don't know... I mean it's probably a couple hundred bucks in gas to drive there and back. And you're definitely going to have to stop and eat a few times, and then there's the tolls. (I have no idea where you live in Illinois, so I'm unsure if you use I-90 or I-80 to come in, but at some point you have to get on the PA Turnpike if you're heading towards Philly.)

Your son is 2, and while I don't know when your daugther's birthday is, she is either already 4, or will be soon. That sounds like hell. I think I'd rather save my sanity. Of course, it would also depend on how often I do the trip. Once a year, I'd pay to fly. It would be cost prohibitive if I had to do it multiple times per year.

 

Usually twice a year we make the trip. It costs us about 500 total in travel expense when driving. Plus putting milage on my vehicle. We pack a cooler, so need to for food stops, which is basicaly fast food anyway. Jsut bathroom breaks and keep on driving. My youngest is a girl as well, though she is built like a linebacker! We have researched the flying expenses. It is over 1200 minimum as we would have to rent a car when out there, then you got fly with car seats, need 4 tickets, etc.. Not worth it.

Back on topic...

My father offered me his truck yesteday. He is buying new and has a 2002? Dodge Dakota, with a Hemi in it. Extended cab, short bed. Dark blue with Silver stripes. Right up my alley. I need it to haul wood for my wood-burning stove. It has 85k in milage. He only wants 3k for the truck(from me only), otherwise he will just trade in when buying new. I don't ahve a 3rd spot in my garage though. It would have to stay outside, which I don't like.

 

I totalled my Escalade EXT a few months ago. It appears there is some law in Illinois that when a vehicle is totalled the insurance company is required to give you the replacment cost for same model, same year, same or better condition. I had my EXT for almost three years; bought it for $17,000 and was given $21,000 by the insurance company. So we splurged and got a new four-door Silverado 1500 LXT.

The wife has an STS -- which is a rocket with the V8.

 

Honda Civic 04, I like it a lot except that the otherwise shiny blue metallic paint has started to peel off like an old dried up fence. I know nothing of cars and just went into the local dealership and told the salesman to pick out the car with the most value and then I bought it.

Do not expect me to do stuff like that, I can wash it once a year, maybe but going all Macchio on its butt is not going to happen. It is only on the hood and according to people it was a crappy paintjob done but I need redo it and it will cost me. Even if I get it repainted I will not start taking care of it.

I drive a pair of Schwalbe Marathon Plus puncture proof tires, on my bike. I don't own a car, and use my bike and/or public transport most of the time. I get along fine. I am clearly an urbanite.

 

You're lucky. When I lived in NYC we didn't need one either because so much was within walking distance, including Central Park, which was at the end of the street (West 84th). There was plenty of public transport within the city. No car payments, no insurance, no up keep. Cars are more trouble than they are worth, but in Houston you cannot get by without one. They are essential.

Here, atuo insurance is mandated by the government. It's called "personal responsibility." It's funny how republicans were all for paying the insurance companies until Obama agreed with them

 

The downside of driving a bike in my town is (a) that it is at times and in some places outright dangerous, and (b) that my city's bicycle thiefs are brazen, relentless and greedy and steal, to use the old adage, about everything that's not welded to the deck. Having been spared for so long suggests that so far I've been lucky indeed.

Also, the exercise and corresponding exposure to daylight has given me a sun tan, making me stand out among my pale faced fellow office dwellers. I do about 17 km every day (which is the way back), which takes me just under an hour. I take the long way, on dedicated bicycle lanes, through the green belt, which is more convenient to drive because there are longer stretches of the way without interruptions by traffic (thus also inherently safer). Longer stretches without interruptions also means I can go faster. The longer way, incidentally, is faster than taking the straight way through town and through traffic.

 

Small Wheels

When I'm feeling cheap I drive My1959 mini. It drives on the right side, has 10" tires, full roof Union Jack and gets about 55 miles per gallon. This gives you a real low down feeling.......really. When I need to haul something bigger than a sandwich I drive a 2008 Mini Cooper S Clubman with the backside barn doors.
