Seriously, WTF? I mean, I know BTA, dmc, and everyone else out on the west coast are going to think I'm a grade-A sissy for getting freaked out a magnitude 5.8 earthquake, but that was a really freaking wierd experience! I work near Baltimore, so we were close enough to the epicenter that the building I worked in rocked back and forth. It was very un-nerving.

Anything in the 5s is like a soothing lullaby. At some hotels you have to pay fifty cents for that sort of relaxation. Be thankful you got it for free this time!

Ah right - forgot that Marceror is from CA as well - apologies for the omission. Well, I'll have you all know that it has been revised to a 5.9 so there! And it was very shallow. OK, I know, I'm reaching.

    Weaklings. :p

We still get 4~5 aftershocks about once or twice a month - in fact there was one just last Saturday evening. Also our city center is still destroyed.

Hope everyone was okay, though, earthquakes aren't fun.

There have been over 2000 earthquakes in Christchurch in the last year.

But must be scary if you're not used to it.

I guess the real question would be how many of those however many thousands are strong enough that you can actually feel them.

If you play around with the website, there have been 91 quakes of magnitude 4.5 or larger, and "only" 29 of magnitude 5 and larger so by far the most of them are rather weak.

That being said, a 4.5 earthquake is large enough to make the headlines here in this country so I guess if I experienced a 5.0 or worse quake, I'd probably be terrified. :shake:

A quake measuring about 32 (yes, 32, not 3.2) was recorded in December 2004.

Of course, that was on a neutron star 50,000 light years away, so it wouldn't have felt like much here.

Let's be a bit more sympathetic to the neutron star residents, shall we? I'm sure it was a big deal to them.

The culprit is easily identified. It wasn't Bush or Cheney, not even Obama, naturally, again, according to the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), it was the gays. And as naturally, having racked up already hurricanes, tornadoes, 9/11 and now this earthquake, these dangerous deviants show no signs of repentance.

There's a theory that the gays caused the NZ earthquakes too, it occurring shortly before Pride Skiing or something. I guess it's natural America should get theirs too, considering there's probably more homosexuals there than here, in numbers if nothing else.

Actually, the best line I heard about the earthquake was...

    It was Bush's fault.

    Get it?

I'm not sure a 5 would even be that bad. I mean, it's a log scale, so a 5.0 is almost 10 times as weak as the 5.9 we had here this week - I'm inclined to think you'd barely notice it. While the 5.9 was un-nerving, it wasn't terrifying or anything. It's not like there's downed buildings in the area or anything. Having never experienced one before it was just really weird.

Bah! That's only 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times stronger than the one we had here!

The only natural hazards Holland's got to deal with are floods and they re not that hazardous. So I guess I live in one of the safest places in the world. I'd probably soil my precious undergarments during a quake measuring 4 or above... :s

We're getting an Earthquake and a Hurricane in the same week! Take that, West Coast...Er...

Actually, I know a 5.9er isn't much to the Westies, but it was the first Earthquake I ever felt, and it was slightly disturbing. At first, I thought my dog was running behind my sofa, but when she came from upstairs when I called her, I thought..."That's weird."

Then the walls and shelves in my house started to shake. Not much, but it was noticable, and a little panic creeped in. I went outside, saw 4 of my neighbors, and asked "I guess it wasn't just my house?" We all laughed.

We've been hearing about Hurricane Irene for 5 days now, and everyone is in a state of emergency/panic. Lowe's and Home Depot are out of generators, and when i drove past the grocery store, it was mobbed. It's already been downgraded to a Cat 1 storm, and I expect it to only be a tropical storm by the time it reaches Philly. Much ado about nothing, it seems, but I gues it's good to be prepared. I have water and canned goods for a week, a new propane tank for the grill, and lemon juice to make ceviche if I need to... :D
