The Mind Flayers underneath the temple district: Are they and their dungeon related to a larger quest, or are the Mind Flayers just a 'side item' like Kangaxx the Lich.

    Thanks!

I think that if your talking about the ones under the temple district I think that one of them has the hammer of thunder bolts +3,

But I'm not 100% sure, but any way, you need a key to get there.

    I think...

[IMG] The mind flayers there are just extra. You need to kill them all to get one of the components for Crom Faeyr. They're not related to anything else.

The key is the one from Firkraags lair.

Another Spoiler: Beside of the War Hammer, you will also find the Staff of Wonders. It isn't very useful, but you can sell it for much gold.

Mind Flayers are worth to kill. The 9000Xp are quite attractive... :)

Actually, there is an extremely tenuous linkage to Jan Jansen's quest. Nothing in the game actually leads you to that spot or the key that it necessitates, though.

I've always wondered if there was originally going to be a larger quest with the Jansen thing. Just like the Twisted Rune looks to have originally been part of the Tanner Murders storyline and the Guarded Compound is mentioned in the Isaea Roenal/Nalia plots.

Do you need the key just to open the secret door in the sewers, or for a later door during this quest?

What minimum level would you recommend before giving this quest a go?

The key is only necessary to open the secret door, IIRC.

As for level, that depends. You really need to be able to protect your entire party from mental obliteration (Chaotic Commands, for example), but if you can do that, its not especially tough. Any party with that could get through Firkraag's dungeon to get the key should have the muscle to deal with this area, if they aren't all dominated or blasted into drooling idiocy.

I would say about fighter/ pally/ ranger level 13 so you have the max number of ranged and melee attacks available. At that time you should also be able to have built up a decent AC for your fighters.
A higher caster level for clerics and mages also improves the duration of chaotic command spells, not to mention the effectiveness of summoned cretures, namely skelettons.

Yep, in Jan Janssen's quest, you have to cure this kid. This is done by someone who turns out to be a mindflayer, I think his name is 'Hidden'. In the lair you find a note that mentions the hidden iirc.

I can give you three reasons to splat their guts all over the place:
(1)(******SPOILER******)you will get the staff of wonders which is useless but sell's for tons
(2)You will find a componet of the Crom Frayer
(3)The 9000XP that you get from them is quite a cool sum

Are those enough reason's for you

Excellent, thanks everyone for the replies and updates. I think I'll wait till I get Imoen, from what I understand, she'll need the experience to catch up with the rest of the party.
