Sorry to ask such a stupid question but please forgive me for I've no experience in AD&D and am quite confused at all the rules.

What is the difference between a 2D4 and a 1D8 weapons. Which one is better?

By the way, are there any good web sites for AD&D beginners?

Also are there any good clubs or scimitars in BG2? Jehera's protection is good and I would like her to do some melee fightings. However, her plain club can do no harm to enemies other than the weakest foes.

    the differences is pure statistics:
1d8 deals 1-8 damage, with a 12.5% equal chance to each possibility, and an average roll of 4.5 damage.

2d4 deals 2-8 damage, with a 14.28% equal chance to each possibility, and an average roll of 5 damage.

Thus, a weapon dealing 2d4 damage is SLIGHTLY better than one dealing 1d8. This, of course, is supposing there are no other factors, and there almost always are.
(i.e. slashing as opposed to piercing)

And, if you want to learn more about D&D, check out www.playdnd.com. It has a demo and makes it relatively easy to start learning.

Damage in the old style pen and paper dungeon and dragon games was determined with dice rolls. For example, a 1d8 weapon means when you roll for the damage the weapon does on a sucessfull hit(the computer does this automatically for you in BG2), you use 1 eight sided dice, doing between 1 and 8 damage. When you have a 2d4 weapon, you use 2 four sided dice and get damage between 2 and 8. I also asume other things figure into the damage done on a sucessfull hit, but I'm no expert. As far as straight base damage goes, a 2d4 weapon has a slightl greater likelyhood of doing more damage. Since I'm assuming your question pertains to long swords and bastard swords, take proficiency points in long swords as there are just a lot more good ones to be had. Also consider the Katana and War Hammer. Each group has one of the more powerfull weapons in the game.

Clubs are a waste of time. Jahiera is a good adition, a front line fighter who can cast duid spells. Nice. There is a decent scmitar available that is +2 and gives an extra attack per round. Of course, I like frostbrand, a smitar +3, 50% fire resistance. But I imported it from the origional game. Only way to get it in BG2 is by fighting Drizzt in Chap 6. As a side note, if you want to make Jahiera a good fighter, you need to give her some sort of strength enhancing items to raise her strength stats(gauntlets of ogre power(prefered), girdle of hill giant strength, etc.).

I don't really know any good beginner web sites, but this site is the best I found for BG2. The forum is helpful for any questions, just point out you are a novice.

Thanks for all the replies. They are very informative to a beginner like me.

Also, please excuse me for my spelling mistakes. I'm no native English speaker and I'm asking the question in office. I think you can understand that...:)

I wouldn't say clubs are a waste of time... There are several nice clubs for Jaheira to use.

For clubs I would go to Trademeet and the Druid Grove. A nice scimitar is there as well.
