the sorceror is the ultimate powerhouse, this has been discussed many times before.

it takes proper planning and microing, but they will kick all asses in bg2

All I see compared to a Fighter/Mage (dual or even multiclass) is a couple extra spell castings per day and the flexibility of not having to memorize the exact spell layout beforehand, but you'll end up using similar combos over and over anyway..?

Losing the fighter side seems awfully lot to lose for such a minor (??) advantage.

Fighter/Mage makes the beginning easier, but multiclassed become weaker in ToB -- fewer spells (by quite a bit when you have only half the experience) and fewer mage HLAs, which are arguably the most powerful HLAs. Who needs to be a fighter when you have a planetar... if you want to act like a fighter you are only a spell away.

A bit off topic but I didn't use planetars for most of the frontline fighting. I had a Wizard Slayer fighter kit person for that. I found their spellcasting quite handy-they can raise and fully heal half the party during a fight (worthwhile ability to me).

Fighter/Wild Mage would be the most uber class if it was allowed but IMHO a Wild Mage can eat a Sorcerer for breakfast no matter what.
Besides it's a lot of fun. Wild Magic rules! :D

Pure (Specialist) Mage, since about 99% of their power comes from their spell book it makes planning a bit more interesting.

Sorcerers with randomly picked spells often make for very interesting solo playthroughs.

I read that as "Half-Assed Elfessin" for some reason. My way is funnier.

Half-elven mage/cleric. Wild mage (with JOG's mod) as the runner up.

Who needs a cleric when they can summon planetars?

I think it could be interesting to play a sorcerer with high physical stats and select spells such as tenser transformation and black blade of disaster. He doesn't need it to be an avatar of destruction but it can be fun if you want to get your hands dirty.

That ranger I took on my first run. He was expert in all kinds of swords at some point.
He fell in love with Aerie, but Korgan threw her out of the group, right in the middle of the underdark.
He was designed after my first PnP as well, and going through the whole adventure was awesome. Actually my friends all did not tell me about Yoshimo, so <Protagonist> really had some hard times...

I'm changing my vote. half-elf Cleric/Mage is great but not as much raw fun as Wild Mage. Especially if you have JOG's wild magic spell additions. The Cleric/Mage is fantastic, once you get the Robe of Vecna almost god-like, but the Wild Mage is more random fun.

I generally either play a Berserker or a Bard. These are opposite ends of the spectrum.

Berserker Tactic: I'm a nice guy until you piss me off, then it's -Me-Thing I want dead-straight line.

Bard Tactic: Think! I'm not that powerful, but skilled at using the resources at hand, often in ways not thought of before.

I agree wild mages are loads (pun intended :p ) of fun, rastamage. And my favourite protagonists have been wild mages with wild mage additions mod ofcourse. I also always liked the cleric/mage combo, back before ToB and all those new stuff. So now I am trying a cleric/wild mage (aided with SK, and it works!) in TuTu, and it is full of fun and suprises...Oh the things that happen when my char tries to heal an unsuspecting someone. :D (suprise, wild surges: they do rock with cleric spells too!)

I tried the Cleric/Wild Mage combo. I don't know why but the surges irritated me more with that combo. Maybe because I was casting more spells and therefore seeing more surges. Or maybe because you can win a fight easier failing a nuke or other mage spell compared to that critical cure spell you needed right then and there.
