I just got the staff of Magi with my sorc. It's the first time I've gotten it and it is just...WOW! I would go so far to say it is overpowered. Permanent invisibility, prot. from evil and charm PLUS spell trap??!! I am thinking of kicking everyone out of my party (except my R/C)!!!

You get it from the twisted rune house in the bridge District. You need a rogue stone to get in the door and you can't leave till you win the fight. SUPER tough battle. Staff of the Magi full stats are:
    +2AC
    +2Saving throws
Invisibility (automatic, you don't have to cast it)
    Immunity to charm
    Protection from evil
    Fireball-lightning (combined) 3 times a day
Trap Spell once a day, lasts for 8 hours (traps 30 spell levels)
Combat Ability (each hit): Dispel Magic
    THACO: +1 (strikes as a +5 weapon)
    Damage: 1d6+1
    quarterstaff
    useable by mages

The protect from evil attribute seems not work, pit fiends still go after me. But yes, it's awesome :)

How did the battle go ?
I remember my lv14 sor had a hard time with them, gota use SI : divination, improved invis, melf meteor to kill Layene the mage, then grab the staff, used all the skull traps, sunfires left to kill Vaxxal the beholder, then left :shake: wish I had taken finger of death instead of Mordy :)

The battle went well Minh So. I had to do this battle twice because the first time the lich never left the table he stands on and after he was dead I couldn't get the loot. IIRC I think the first time the lich was the only one there and his friends never showed up and I killed him with ranged weapons. Maybe because I never actually entered the room. I sent in a wizard eye with monster summons (got the archer monsters) and with projected images. The second time wasn't TOO hard cuz I'm maxed out in levels. Hide in the corner, summons, lots of spell protections, Proj. Image, Haer'Dalis with Melfs Meteors, Keldorn with Caromsyr and True Sight, R/C with Crom Faeyr and Mace of Disruption/Cloak of Mirroring (he went in first of course after the summons, to get the beholders attention...love bouncing those beholder rays). The Sorcs and Imoens projected images casting sequenced/triggered protection removals then offensive spells (did I use Horrid Wilting? I think I did). I went for the lich first because he teleported right to me. Then the mage, then mopped up the rest. They went down hard with no party deaths. Was scary during the time stop though. I'm glad he focused on trying to kill my R/C instead of someone else. The dumb thing I did was cast death spell at the fiend thinking it was summoned...forgot it was gated. It did however take out the Skeleton Warrior they had turned against me.

    1) I wonder if the protection from evil not working is not a bug fixed by an unofficial patch.
    2) I like to give this staff to Imoen, among other uses she can detect & disarm traps while being invisible. Now, can Edwin do that?

Edwin has no thieving skills, so no, he cannot.

Everybody does. I've dualled him into a thief, once, using tomes of Dex, and it was fun experience. I remember that battle, and Edwin actually laid traps instead of Skull traps. :D

It's a pity this party has staff of the Magi, I mean, THEY could be easily killed by a low-level solo sorcerer with a staff of the Magi. But as they have it... ;)

    Wil,

the Baldurdash Fixpack includes a patch that restores the protection from evil effect to the staff of the magi.

This staff is not bad , but i have mood that give you Staff OF The DArk ArhiMage ... This staff ... is maybe the best in the game but there is a bug you do not see it and your mage can not fight :) But have the great ability "Cast 3 fingers of death to you and to your enemy neary without save " :) I have yoused it and if your mage have big saving you can kill dragon with it :)

For the battle first kill lyana then go for the beholder and the fighter but remembur YOU MUST HAVE MANY stupid spells ! Why ? When lich try to cast only tager him with one magic missle (a tactic and for dragons :) ) and summon every unit you can (without the elements when your mage is stuned and may not success and that make you another enemy :) ) That's All From ME :)
