The "official" origin story of Wolverine.

 

Watched The Devil's Tomb starring Cuba Gooding Junior, and I recommend NOT seeing this movie, usually I like CGJ's movies, but this was awful.

 

Joa, my problem was less than content and more the delivery. The events first five minutes could have been compelling. Instead they were boring and then actively stupid. Symbolic stuff can be handled well; this symbolic stuff wasn't. And so on.

Origin and Origins are both pretty dire, by all accounts. So that's not really a defense. Especially since the stuff original to the movie--like the final boss--is so laughable.

 

Monty Python's Holy Grail, for the zillioneth time, still cracks me up!

 

They kinda screwed up a good character there with Deadpool (the end boss). I have read a bunch of marvel stuff the last few months and I could well see him get a movie of his own but I guess that is kinda screwed now.

 

I saw Wolvie this last weekend, too. On a pure entertainment / turn off the brain / popcorn-munching level, it was a good movie. On a plot / character-development / intelligent writing level, it was a turd. A peanutty, steaming, ulceritive colitis-suffering one. Just dumb and awful. Pointless characters, savaging well-established canon, plot holes galore and about a hundred missed opportunities.

Here's an example (and yeah, it's a spoiler - sue me): Wolverine has bony, ridged claws naturally, according to the first half hour. Then he goes through the weapon-x grafting process, which takes all of a few minutes and is completely unguided by any kind of craftsmanship whatsoever - just basically liquifying his bones and replacing it all with adamantium. Let's pretend for a minute that that makes any sense (even in a comic); how'd his claws come out razor-sharp and polished smooth from such a crude, random process?

Oh yeah - because the director thinks we're dumb. In all fairness, since I paid full price to see the movie, he's right.

 

Secretary.

Quite a weird film.

Watched it because I was told I was similar to the protagonist. Not sure how to take that

 

My favourite of the Python movies.

Star Trek. Extremely stupid but also extremely fun (take note, everyone involved with Wolverine). ETA: Why is it stupid? Go watch Galaxy Quest. That's why it's stupid.

Best/worst line of the film: "A supernova was threatening to destroy the galaxy."

 

I just got home from watching it. I thought it was AWESOME! I miss the phaser lines as opposed to the shot bursts, but overall I thought is was a really good relaunch of Trek.

Everything is definitely sleeker - but overall, I liked what I saw. Karl Urban was great as McCoy, and Simon Pegg did a great Scotty. Zach Quinto was a perfect Spock. I wasn't sure I would like Chris Pine as Kirk, but he pulled it off.

I left the theater wanting to see more of this Trek universe. JJ Abrams has revitalized the franchise.

Now that you mention it, and I've thought about it a little, the Enterprise did seem a little Galaxy Questy. But you know what? I don't care. It worked for me. I hope there are more stories from this Star Trek crew!

 

To be quite precise, this one:

The hunt for gollum. A fanfic movie, that appears to be impossible for me to embed, and that was made for less than 5000 pounds. Pretty good actually.

 

Watched Star Trek yesterday. The first half hour or so is awful, though it thankfully gets better afterwards. Better than I was expecting (I did have rather low expectations, especially considering how bad some the early bits are) and overall fun, but they really could have toned down some of the stupidity. Leonard Nimoy was a surprise - he's around for much longer than I thought he would be.

 

Huh. I thought the first half hour wasn't noticeably weaker than the rest of the film. And was fun. Actually, I especially liked the com chatter at the very very beginning of the movie.

 

The very very beginning isn't so bad (though I've seen better prologues), but the bits with Kirk and Spock as children are among the most awkward attempts at characterisation that I've seen. Having a narrator saying "and this is why he became this and that when he grew up" would have been more subtle and less painful.

I would say the movie really starts picking up once the "trio" starts forming, just after they get onboard the Enterprise. It gets pretty cheesy from then on too, but at least the banter is entertaining rather than painful. All the Star Trek movies I've seen (Generations and up) were at their weakest when on-planet and much better when something's going on in space (it's particularly noticeable with First Contact), and I thought this one followed the pattern pretty closely.

 

X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It was entertaining, I don't know how well it followed the comic book (never read) but a pretty good watch.

 

Wolverine. Entertaining is the best description for it. Plot was silly but what the hell. My main fault would be the 'origins' of a character about 200 years old pretty much all takes place over a fortnight or so (not that there's a timeline in it). Also, the amount of X-men who appear in younger guises was ridiculous. It really is a small world, eh?

 

Broken Arrow, cool action movie but definitely paled in comparison to Face/Off which came out just a year later.

 

I finally watched Gran Torino and I absolutely loved it. I only wish that I had been able to see it in theaters with all my Asian friends like we had planned
