First work day of 2008 for me. It snowed here last night and with the insidious effect of not-quite-frozen ground allowing the first flakes to melt and then refreeze into a layer of ice under about 2 inches of snow - the roads are bad. I did make it up the hill outside my house (driving), but only by taking a running start - I had watched two small pickups get halfway up and then slide across the road, so I knew what to expect. It's 16 degrees F (about -9 C), which is fairly cold for East Tennessee at 10:00 AM, and it's not expected to reach freezing, so the roads aren't going to get better. Plows? What plows? East Tennessee, remember?

So, I am planning to work long enough to say I've been here, and go home in early afternoon.

To those who are just stumbling in after two days/nights of revels, Happy New Year! ;)

Went to my grandma's yesterday, there was a huge snow tempest, you couldn't see past ten meters away on the road. It was kind of scary. However she gave the most kick ass christmas present, an electric coffee grinder, coffee beans and Victor Hugo's Les misérables :p

Well, New Year's Day was pretty dull. My wife had to work so I ended up playing Civilization and then washing my car. Normally that would have been ok, but for New Year's Day it's not real satisfying. It didn't help that I was dreading going back to work the next day. Oh well. I think that 2008 is going to be a good year so I don't mind a dull day to start it off. :)

I have 2 days of work left, a grand total of 11 hours work, before my contract is over, then its back to the joys of unemployment.

Today is my first day back at work after the Christmas break. I used vacation days to take the 24th, 27th, 28th and 31st off. Getting up at 5 this morning wasn't a lot of fun given that I had become used to staying up late and sleeping in until 10. To top it all off there is almost nothing for me to do and there will be nothing until next Monday so I have three days of mind numbing boredom this week.

I actually had something worthwhile to post here (I think) but it must have gotten scared and run away :(

Oh well, back to the thinking board

Oh yeah, finally got around to watching the 2-part mini-series of Hogfather that was on TV here just before Christmas, thoroughly enjoyable :thumb:

After a family gathering and quiet New Years party, I came home to find a house guest that would be sleeping in the room with my computer. Just my luck...

That happened to my buddy a couple of years ago. The person in question was known for stealing things, so we set up his webcam to record an hour long clip, and then locked his computer (windows key + L). Besides watching him try to log on to the computer, we also caught him stealing some blank DVDs (expensive at the time).

I've always wanted a webcam since then...but I've never caughed up the cash for one. :rolling:

I met a guy who wore the chav hat, but wasn't a chav. He boggled my mind.

    Morning, all.
Not as cold as predicted - just 13 F here (about -10 C).
My office is cold. I am burning electricity like mad using a space heater. However, I have ordered down booties so I can endure better later this winter. Bet it won't get this cold again, thanks to my foresight.
I know no one cares about the weather here. That is why I talk about it as babble! ;)

So, will we wait till 1000 posts to start RBP 101? Inquiring minds want to know.

It's supposed to rain for the next four days. I hope it really does. I'll believe it when I see it though.

I applied for another job in Washington last night. Let's hope it works out.

It snowed today! Not too heavily, but the city looks beautiful when it turns white.

Funniest part of the day was when a colleague and I sat in the office watching half a dozen golfers who simply wouldn't give up, through hail and snow and blizzard. Some people are just too stubborn :shake:
