    Welcome to the boards!
It depends on your Strengh! If you have enough of it...you could use Celestial Fury, Sword of Backstabing, or any sword that have a good bonus and other advantages! It's up to you...

    [IMG] Fury:?
    1. But are katanas suitable for backstabbing? As i remember Yoshi never backstabbs with katana?
    2. Fury - and than face that damn Kuroisan - i'm still alone with Minsk and it's quite expensive to GULP everytime i face that ACID-Resistant freak?
    ANY SPOILERS?

I had no problem on backstabing with Katanas...but if you want other swords, just suit yourself with Sword of Backstabing!
    I don't remember who's this Kuroisan...who's him?

Hmmm... well you can backstab with most weapons except two handed ones. My choice's still Celestial Fury, best weapon for most condition.

I believe you can backstab with any weapon usable by a thief, so that would include staves as well. The staff of Rhynn would be a good choice as it is a +4 weapon.

I tried to backstab with Imoen with staff of the magi and the game said, Weapon not sutable for backstabbing so i think it needs to be a dagger/sword type of weapon

[Is the Staff of the Magi useable by a thief? No. - BTA]

Does the Short Sword of Backstabbing +3 add anything to backstabbing ability? Or does it hit just like any other +3 short sword, but with a fancy name?

There's a bonus specific to it, but I don't remember exactly what it is. I think it's a flat bonus to strike.

I extracted the sword and checked it with IEEP, it says nothing about a bonus...

I like the Katana for backstabbing because it is 1d10, while a short sword is 1d6. oh yeah, what the hell is the d in 1d6? does it mean 1 damage 10, like 1-10?

d is for dice. So hitting with a 1d6 weapon is like rolling "one dice of six sides", so 1-6 damage.

Still no update on the Short Sword of Backstabbing bonuses? hmmmm...

One thing I've noticed about the Short Sword of Backstabbing is that the character's THACO will go down by 4 when they are invisible (if they are holding the sword obviously). I know that theives and rangers get a +4 bonus to attack on their first attack coming out of the shadows, but usually this is reflected in the "to hit" roll rather than in the character's THACO. So, I've always taken this to mean that the Short Sword of Backstabbing gives a +4 bonus when hidden in the shadows or invisible.

[IMG] I would just use the Sword of Backstabing because it was made for backstabing. But if your evil, mabey you should use Neb's Nasty Cutter (hahahah).

So is 2d4 better than 1d6? If what you say applies, than a 2d4 would be 2-8(1d4x2). If so, how come a flail (1d6+1) seems to score more damage than a War Hammer (2d4). A flail would score for 1-6+1 (or 2-7) while a hammer would score for 2d4 or (2-8). I've been playing D&D games all my life, so I don't know why I've never checked on this before

If the number generator is weighted properly, the hammer should come out slightly better on average. The average roll of 2 4-sided dice is 5.

    1-6 + 1 gives a mathematical average of 4.5.

That is of course *if* the numbers are weighted properly. :)
