According to Sci Fi Wire's news, science fiction & fantasy is the victorious theme at this year's E3. Here's a snip:

SF and fantasy-themed games were the most popular titles at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, which concluded last week, including such hot titles as Gears of War, Mass Effect and Heavenly Sword. The games drew much of the attention, despite a heavy showing of sports games (Fight Night Round 3, Madden NFL 2007), racing games (Grand Turismo HD, Moto GP) and war games (Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway). SF and fantasy-themed games dominated IGN.com's nomination list for Best of E3 2006 awards. Said Peer Schneider, IGN's vice president of content publishing: "Most people just like to play these kinds of games."

Yeah, fantasy and science fiction pwns all, there's no argument.

Read the whole thing at Sci Fi Wire.

Thats because unlike a lot of other types of media they CAN have EVERYTHING the others have and a lot more. In other words the potential for variety and "newness" is a lot higher when the imagination is used as a source, rather than tradition. And it's the exploration of these spaces that moves us beyond where we are and that a lot more fun then going over the same road ad-infinitum.
