I just downloaded the Vader soundset from this site and it includes the portraits as well.
    BTW, it freakin' rocks!

I've read that Ftr/Mage is a very viable dual-class for soloing. I think that soloing Darth Vader through Amn could be fun.

I need some help/input on a few things:

    1) Are any of the kits (including Specialist Wizards) more or less appropriate for the Lord of the Sith? I definitely think he's a Ftr/Mage of some sort.

    2) If he's a Ftr/Mage though, his avatar will be a Ftr avatar. How do I change it to a wizard avatar so he has the long black cloak?

    3) What sorts of items are most appropriate? I think Celestial Fury is right, but what else.

    4) What spells are up his alley? I think Lightning types are in there, and some emotion/fear type things.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

    Jake

    1) I'd go Kensai/Mage if you're set on Dual Classing, but Vader is probably more of a multiclassed F/M (no kit)

    2) shadowkeeper (you can even go with a Mage avatar from the beginning if you want!).

    3) Flametongue. It'll hit almost anything, and it's red. Spend proficiencies in longsword and single weapon style.

    4) Is telekinesis in this game? I know Domination is. The charm spells might work, and definitely Horror! Stoneskin isn't all that appropriate, but it's needed for a F/M. So is knock ;)

Ah, good thinking! I used the Darth Vader soundset in Icewind Dale II for a Darth Vader character. He was a cleric/monk. He rocked.

Kensai/Mage dual is the way to go. He's human, after all. Robe of Vecna would be good. Ring of Gaxx... the works! And use shadowkeeper to give him the "hula wizard" appearance. That one is the most Vader-esk, I think. Although "Death Knight" is good too.

How about a staff (as a double edged light sabre)
Have you got a pic of Darth Vader to use as the Portrait?

I have that Darth Vader portrait/soundset also, although I don't use it anymore. I was inspired to create my own portrait-soundsets of my 5 favorite movie/music celebrities, and they are my fully-custom party... which includes my own Improved Mr. T soundset (one exists on Sorcerers.net, but I made it better... I should submit to Sorcerers).

    Mr. T is a half-orc F/T. I'd agree with F/M for Vader.

Shocking Grasp, Vampiric Touch, Animate Storm-Troopers (errr... Animate Dead), Black Blade Of Disaster, Death Fog, all seem appropriate in some stretch of imagination.

    Animate storm troopers, nice!

    I can't make him a Kensai.
    Lord Vader definitely wears armor.
I gotta figure out how to hack the Human Flesh Armor to make it black in appearance.

I'll check out the Hula mage, since I did get me Shadowkeeper.

I'd forgotten about shocking grasp. I'm going to use that one and ghoul touch alot as touch attacks in combat.

Don't forget to only give him profiencies in single weapon style... This is tempting me to make a 'Jedi' fighter kit (three types - light, dark and neutral) gaining increased speed, special abilities for every level depending on alignment, limited to two weapon and single weapon styles, AC bonus, eventually constantly under the effect of Pysical Mirror (heh heh - lightsaber defelection anyone? :) ).

SACRILEGE!!! Get your classics right. Vader uses a single-edged, red lightsaber. No fancy gimmicks on Vader's Lightsaber.

So indeed, some kind of flaming or red looking sword is needed, preferably a katana or bastard sword, since that is actually how a lightsaber is used, as a one-hand-and-a-half sword.

How so? The problem with bastard swords is that they are so damn heavy. A lightsaber's problem is that it weighs NOTHING but the handle so someone untrained is just as likely to chop their own arm off much less someone else's.

I guess the best way to make a more or less realistic Lord Vader is developing a custom kit. That's the best way to make sure the right abilities come in the right time. If you're really persistent, you can edit a new HLA table for him, as well. Then you would need to give him proficiency in katana or bastard sword and single weapon style.

If you're really bored, you can make a glowing sword for him, and some black armour similar to what you get from killing that Shadow Dragon in Umar Hills, and a big helmet. It's all doable, but I'd rather peel potatoes than do the pixel work for that.

Ah, and the abilities. You can always use the spell editor for that. Then in the kit file you define what becomes usable for you and what's applied on you. It's all spell files.

I never bothered with ghoul touch until I started reading this thread a few days ago. I made a F/M and gave him all the necro-vader spells I could think of...and found new delight in the game when I paralyzed Rasputin in the Improved Illych battle (all the funnier since he was trying to stun me with his quivering palm). After that I went around paralyzing everything I could in the first two chapters of the game. This here ghoul touch ain't a bad spell at all!

One of my favorite style D&D characters is the touch attacking mage.

It's a tough one to pull off, since you have to be willing to get into the middle of combat as a mage. It is, however, so much fun to scoot around the battle ignoring opponents armor bonuses and paralyzing them.

And my fighter buddies love being able to unload on a helpless opponent.

Abomination, the bastard sword is ideal because of the thought, it can be used either two-handed or one-handed, just like you can with a lightsaber. Although this isn't implemented in the game engine.

Almost any weapon can be wielded with two hands provided the handle is long enough when it was forged - some longswords have a long handle, all blunt weapons have a long enough handle. I would consider lightsabers to be 'daggers' simply due to their weight. Think of a situation when a Jedi is separated from his lightsaber. The Jedi will NOT be proficient with Bastard Swords because the skill to use a bastard sword is based on the person's balance with a heavy weapon. A dagger weighs just as much as a light-saber and would have the most similar balance.

@ Meatdog: Isn't there a patch or a mini-mod somewhere on this site that allows you to wield katanas and bastard swords in one hand or two hands?

Vader is not a Mage. Although his abilities might be fairly well represented by the Mage class, he far more like a Cleric than a Mage. His entire outlook on life is more like a Cleric. However, I agree that, ultimately, Vader is beyond the constraints of DnD classes.
