I am a fighter / thief in Baldurs Gate, and I have 2 points in small swords and 2 in missile weapons. I thought that any character besides a pure fighter can only have a maximum of 2 proficiencies, so I added the other in bows without even checking. Later on I saw that Coran has 3 in large swords...does this mean that I could have put the extra into short swords for a total of 3? Did I completely screw my character? Thanks for any comments.

You are correct in that a non-fighter character can have a maximum of 2 points in a weapon proficiency. I have never played Coran, but I assume he probably just has unique abilities.

I don't know exactly, Pure fighters can specialize to 5 slots in one weapon. I think Fighter/Thiefs can also specialize because they also are fighters so I suppose they can specialize beyond normal specialization. I forgot how this is with my Fighter/Thief but I'll take a look.

At least you can't specialize with fighters beyond 2 slots when you start a new character. When it is possible, you can cange the profiencies in GateKeeper.

That depends if you are a human Fighter/thief (Dual-class) or a non-human fighter/thief (Multiclass). If its the first you COULD have put three into Small Swords and if its the second you couldnt. But it doesnt matter that much anyway cause three slots aint that much better than two slots IIRC.

That's not true. He says Coran has 3 slots in Long Sword. Coran is an Elf. So he is no Dual Classed Fighter/Thief.

Thanks for all the replies guys, but, is anyone 100% certain without a doubt about this issue? I don't want to continue playing this fighter thief if I screwed up his weapons. Thanks

[IMG] In BG the NPC's sometimes break the rules. After all the little extra things about them is what makes them so special. Don't worry, you haven't screwed up your character, enjoy the game with him and good luck:).

For multiclass Fighter/Thief, 2 points is the maximum you can put in a weapon proficiency.

For a Fighter (later going to dual class to a Thief), the maximim is 5 points (which you can't reach in BG1).

Coran is a NPC and breaks the normal rules by have 3 points in a weapon proficiency.

BTW, I thought Coran had 3 points in Bows not Large Swords. :hmm:

And yes I'm 100% certain!

EDIT: Referred to BG2 weapon proficiency names rather than the BG1 names. All fixed now. :D

Thanks for the info. Now I can play my fighter / thief with confidence once more. I'm pretty sure Coran has 2 in bows, and 3 in large swords. Sort of a waste for backstabbing :)

Hmmm....it must change from game to game I guess. In my game, Coran did have three points in longbow, which made him all the better with them on top of his godly 20 dexterity. And I'll vouch again for the fact that any fighter/whatever multiclass can't have more than 2 proficiency points in any given weapon within normal game confines. Coran, or course, is a differnt story.
