Where have all the Aliens gone?

Is it just me, or have the Alien Controversies, UFO Footage, and strange outopsies, just sort of vansihed? I mean, when was the last time some slack-jawed farmer stumbled into town and claimed he was abducted and anal probed by aliens? Where have all the fuzzy footages of "UFOs" gone?

I for one think that as Adobe Photoshop keeps getting better, so should the UFO sightings! Right?

The news just isn't much fun without the occasional story of alien abductions and UFO sightings. I miss the parinoid, good ol' days.

But, perhaps I'm wrong...have there been any new abductions?

Good point, Kitrax. I never really thought about aliens until you brought this up. I guess the conspiracies have gone away ever since "The X-Files" got cancelled.

 

Yes, I remember clearly that there was more hype about this stuff when the X-files was still running.

On similar topic: Let's gather an army and invade area 51 to see what's in there, I'm sooo curious.

 

Army conspirasies are more up in time now, with septemper 11. and the resent wars. UFO sightings are sooo last centurie.

Conspiracy theories are so handy. If there's evidence, it's a conspiracy. If there's no evidence, it's a cover-up and therefore a conspiracy.

They're so intelligent that they have become bored. So, they say: Hah, lets let them ponder whether we exist or not for the next 2 hundred years. Then, we'll make another appearance.

the other day i was watching a program with a french pilot claimin he got an "alien microchip" installed behind his left ear on a misson during WWII or something, and there was something behind his ear!! turned out it was a cyste!!

Interesting how there were no alien abductions before this century. It was mostly vampires, or demons, or witches or something else. Maybe this century we'll get, I dunno, cobras. Argghh!!! Cobras!!!

Maybe Kitrax just needs a good anal probe.

And Star Trek, Star Wars, The 'Alien' series, Babylon 5, and The X-Files haven't? Why pick on Stargate? It's chump-change next to those five.

 

You call Star Trek firmly rooted in the geek domain? There are more technological inconsistencies in the average episode of Star Trek (any series) than in all of SG-1 so far. I think the real reason is that Star Trek: TNG set the public stage for serious Sci-Fi. Nothing to date has taken advantage of it like Stargate has.

 

While I disagree with many of your assertions here - especially "Needless to say, SG-1 is a much bigger mainstream success than Trek ever was," (how many sequels did Stargate spawn? Oh yeah, none.)and that either SG show has penetrated the mainstream any more than Star Trek: TNG did (and I assure you, StarGate-TV is STILL firmly rooted in geekdom, at least here in the states - can't speak for Slovenia), I will concede that given the success of the Stargate TV shows, chump-change is probably selling Stargate a little short. But to think of it as the single biggest cause for the popcorn-ification of aliens is pretty silly. Just ask ET.

As to Kitrix's original question:

I would answer that I think technology is making it easier and easier to debunk theories and spot phonies these days. I would imagine there probably are just as many wild-ass theories and so-called "sightings" out there as there were 30 years ago, they just get shot down a lot quicker now - at least before they hit mainstream media sources.

 

I don't think it is the fact that technology has made it easier to debunk fakes that has caused the decline in UFO sighting images, rather it is the fact that we all know that just about anyone can make a visually convincing fake. We need a whole lot more than a video or photographic image of something before we will even begin to accept that it may be real.

As far as Star Gate goes - it has had a really long run but it has been serving its niche market without ever coming close to Star Trek or Star Wars in terms of cultural impact. The vast majority of people have never even seen a single episode of Star Gate. In fact, I bet if I polled people around here most of them would not even know that it existed.

 

Good point, JSBB. I guess that was part of my larger point, too, that I didn't include: that technology also makes it easier to fake things. And along with that, skepticism increases. The effects in the latest Star Wars movies looked fantastic, but can still be pointed out as computer generated by most people, because it's so common now, and because it's what people look for. Now if a budget like Lucas's isn't vulnerable to skepticism, neither is Jim-Bob and his latest UFO sighting on his $50 wal-mart camcorder.

 

Well, i wish they left instructions on how to remove this huge satelite disc that's sticking out of my butt, otherwise i can't really say i miss them.
