These thief skills are still puzzling me.

I read that hide in shadows was your ability to 'go invisible' and move silently was your ability to stay hidden. However, others say that this is not the case. They are averaged and that is then your stealth skill (e.g. 100 HinS plus 0 Msilent, 0 HinS plus 100 Msilent and 50 HinS plus 50 Msilent are all the same).

BTW I have just gone to 100, 100 and still keep failing (more then minsc ever did).

    Any thoughs?

There is a post on this same page concerning the exact same thing...check that.

Also, try actually putting your character in the shadows, it will greatly increase the chances. After all, wouldn't it be rather difficult to hide in the shadows in pure daylight?

First, the reason why BG-1 had only the "stealth"-skill was the x-cap - it would not have been possible to develop this and the other thieving abilities properly considering the points available due to the x-cap.
In BG-2 there was much more space and they split it up gain, as in original D&D (iirc). Both skills, "hide in shadows" and "move silent" cooperate and work as they are named:

-hide in shadows is the skill hat allows you to hide in shadows (I'm serious) and
-move silent basically characterizes your ability to remain hidden after leaving the shadows and moving in open terrain.

The manual also mentions "climb walls" as a skill, but I guess that was never implemented.

Also, the armor you are wearing can have some effect, the heavier the armor, the harder it is to hide, right?

And isn't it easier to hide at night?

I'm guessing that moving silently would have no effect if you are not moving. So if you are hidden, and not moving, why would "moving silently" have any bearing? ('scuse me, I'm just a beginner).

For the effects of armor on thieving skills, Laches did some research into that and you can find his results on the TOB forum here: http://www.sorcerers.net/ubb/Forum10/HTML/000780.html

WARNING: minor TOB spoilers for some items and some high level abilities.

    Hope that helps.
