DO you think there is an excuse for prostitution? e.g. a mother with a child, no money, and has to sleep with men for money? SOme people don't really agree.

Shouldn't make love be the best, happiest thing is the world? Imagine this, you are even happier when you spend the money. Does this sound right?

Don't you think that a mother who had to resort to prostitution would (sooner or later) end up getting pregnant again, thus making that profession a bad idea?

[IMG] I see no excuse for such a debasing occupation.

Unless you enjoy doing that sort of thing.

BTW - is there not already a topic on this?

I know a good excuse: young girls who are being forced into prostitution, like what happens a lot in Thailand and some eatern European countries. There's not much they can do against it. But i also know another case. A girl who wants to go to lawschool, but can't afford it and neither can her parents. She tried different jobs, but it didn't pay off. Then she became an escort girl, for a little more than a year. She is now a lawyer, drives a big Mercedes, and lives in a big house. Wrong ? That totally depends on your own priorities.

Well, it depends really. Girls being forced into prostitution is the most degrading, awful thing imaginable. But what if you are female, desperately need money, and have no other choice? I suspect moral compunctions vanish confronted with the possibility that one may starve. It is inevitable, in this world, that some girls will be forced into it...but at least they should make the choice (such as it is). Not have someone make it for you.

I lived in Nevada for 10 years. In NV prostitution is legal in several counties. I have never been to one of the "ranches" as they like to call them, but I did have customers who worked at them. I can tell you this; they are rife with drugs, alcoholics, organized crime, and women with major self-esteem issues. At least as a regulated business theladies are required to be tested for STD's and had protection against abuse from the clients (all transaction must be completed on property, and there are very big dudes who will "escort" you out if you mistreat the ladies). I am torn on this issue. I saw first hand what it did to these women’s' psyche, but it is the "oldest profession", and it will probably never be eliminated. Also, the further you try to repress it, the worse the problem seems to become. Where I live now there is no legalized form of prostitution, and certain parts of town crawl with hookers. They have very little protection, and the AIDS rate among them is incredibly high.

I really don't want to ever see prostitution become acceptable, but yet, I think it is better to have it available in a controlled, relatively safe form.

I do find it interesting that NV has legalized gaming, free drinks if you are gambling, and prostitution on a county by county basis, but that possession any amount of marijuana is a felony. That just seems odd to me!

If you are of legal age and for some reason or another feel that that is the only way to live( which by the way is not.) then to an extent I can understand. I do not agree with it, but every individual has a choice.

As for those that are foced into prostitution the answer is NO. It is clearly not right and it is a sick greedy individual who preys on these people, who usually are run-aways, or have hit rock bottom and have no one else who might be able to help. They know that to the public, these people are invisible, who's going to miss someone that nobody notices.

Going back to the choice Idea. There are many underaged prostitutes, and many Johns that frankly couldn't care less how young they are. That really disturbs me. Please don't think that only stuff like that happens only away from the U.S., just about Two maybe Three months ago a big Sex club, (the illegal forced them into it, kidnapped, and abducted the people, not to mention brainwashing, kind of club.) was found out. It was going on for sometime, except the Police did not have enough evidence, even after different girls and women on several different occasions would ask for help.

By The Way. If you like to call it forced prostitution, then go ahead. But know that is still Rape.

[IMG] I do have different views on this topic.

I don't really think that it is right, and I certainly don't agree into anyone being forced into it. If they do it and it is their own choice then it is up to them. I know I wouldn't do such a thing. It depends on who you're asking sort of thing.

OK, now time for me to speak. I find the very idea abhorrent. Nothing will convince me, so please don't try. However, it's better than rape, seduction or starting relations for sex only. Some animals are simply not teachable. This way we can't ban prostitution. If we do anyway, things will only go worse if the government can't enforce there not being any brothels including mafia's secret ones with slaves, I repeat: slaves, forced into sex. If legalised, some control may be exercised over this business. No slavery, no drugs, some degree of hygiene preserved etc. As long as men will fancy paid sex it's the best we can do with our governments being so 'powerful' as they are.

    There's a difference between an anti-social and a sociopath.

There is a difference between a prostitute and an indentured servant.

There is a difference between a prostitute and a slave.

It becomes something else. And, the reality of the situation, is that schools, books, papers, and CNN all refer to it wrongly.

If a woman has sex for money, that is the defination; yes.

But the problem is, they don't upgrade the situation.

Like a pedophile. The pedophile is aroused by images and the idea. But as soon as they touch a kid, they "upgrade" to child molestor. They are still a pedophile, but now they have the elite status of molestor.

Sure, sure. They're just simplifing a complex situation. Like any good Mathmatics student will tell you, simplifing it too far makes the whole thing completely different...

I honestly cannot fathom why anyone would enter such an occupation. Nor can I understand how any man (or woman, there are male prostitutes too) would become so obsessed with sex that they could spend most of their money just to get it from someone who sleeps with hundreds of different individuals.

One instance of semi-forced prostitution that occurs here in America circles around the drug trade. Sometimes mothers are too poor to afford the drugs that they are addicted to (usually cocaine, but others too) that they simply allow their dealers to sell the "services" of their children in exchange for the drugs. This is even more abhorent than "willing" prostitutes.

While there are individuals out there that would be willing to become a prostitute simply for the enjoyment factor, I do not understand this. Why anyone would be willing to sacrifice love for stone-cold sex is beyond me. Having it legalized would make it far safer for these types of people, but it would open up another can of worms that would make certain aspects of society intolerable to me.

@ejsmith: did you actually read that post?

I stated that there are 'unofficial' brothels that are run by mafia and that in such brothels 'prostitutes' are kept in slavery conditions and are forced into sex. So where did I say there's no difference between prostitutes and slaves, pray tell me?

Please read what people write before sharing wisdom, OK? This is what a law student (logic included) tells you.

A excuse for prostitution? IMO, no

But who am I to judge them?

There's no excuse for prostitution itself. It's abhorrent for me if you want my opinion. However if more evil is to be avoided by legalising it than by keeping it illegal, legalisation should be considered. I could give several other arguments both pro and contra. We are having a brainstorm and seeking a conclusion together, aren't we?

    How about a statement ?

If it wasn't for prostitutes there would be many more cases of rape and other sexual crimes.

    Comments ?

In the sense of absolute right and wrong, of course prostitution is wrong. If a mother with a kid really had no other option, I wouldn't be too hard on her (though I WOULD be tough on the john). I would hope that nobody would ever be forced into such a position where there really IS no other option. A lot of women say that they have no other choice, but I don't buy that. There's tons of charities out there.

I certainly think that there are definite mental, emotional, social, and (think AIDS) consequences that prostitution brings. Steps should be taken to stop it and to give options to these women who feel they have none.
