In your opinion which NPCs are absolutely must join the party types and which are so crap that they are a waste of time?

Darley is good for any party in my opinion, she's awesome in melee with rod of smiting and is a great sorceress, especially as a demon. After that, the must-have NPC list becomes a bit sparse.

If you can get her, get Mother Screng in Nulb, she's a level 9 cleric and really awesome.

Otis, the blacksmith in Nulb is decent, and you need him around to get Mother Screng.

Scorpp the Hill Giant and Oothgrist the Troll can be fun for an evil party that needs some extra muscle. Ditto for Pintark and Tuelk.

Prince Thrommel is terrific, doesn't loot, and once you save him you can get a little surprise gift.....

Elmo *could* be good at the beginning, but he will eventually get 50,000 or so of your gold if you keep him around.

    Must Avoid:

Ed, Ed and Ted: Joke characters, don't take them

Turoko-Really bad, and tough to get.

    Fruella is super evil.

    If I wasn't cheating:

    1) I'd pickup Elmo for 200 gold, use him to kill the Temple "spies", and chuck him before looting the bodies. You make a MASSIVE amount of gold from selling a few valuables they had, and it's completely worth your while to use Elmo to soak up damage and then chuck him. All for 200 gold (you can easily get 20k gold from the spies). Maybe use him to clear out the grove, as well, since that's strictly experience.

    2) Save Thrommel. Use the sword/swords, because they *always* hit. Comes in super-duper handy on some select enemies which are notoriously hard to hit.

    3) I always "hire" the prostitutes, give them a bunch of junk from whoever we happen to stomp along the way, let them sell their stuff at a merchant (NPC's always sell stuff in their inventory that's not "theirs", including helpful stuff like potions and weapons) to give them a bit of gold, and then chuck them. Gives me a fuzzy feeling like they have a chance to make it in the world, after all they've been through. I'm about to wipe out the Temple, so it's not going to be teeming with evil and decay all that much longer.

    4) If you can get him, Scorpp is made for one single INTENSE purpose. Killing the greater temple leader. There's a bunch of Ettins and some other nasties around him, and Scorpp is a "disposable" NPC. You can pick and choose when to meet him, and all that's left to do is loot his body. Same thing with Oothgrist, but you're more likely to meet him from necessity or sheer chance. Use him too, if you got him; that battle is tough because of the swarm of enemies around your party.
