How to extract cut-scenes from PC games?

    Hello everyone! This is my first post. I didn't know where to post this topic, so the FAQs told me this is the best place.

    I own many PC games and I was wondering how do you extract a opening movie and in-game cut-scenes? The ones on Youtube are just bad quality.

    Of course, I'm really interested in cut-scenes from Bioware and Black Isle related games... ;)

    If we can't extract or convert them, then is there a way to record them while I'm playing the game?

    [​IMG] I presume you mean pre-NWN games? Look for Infinity Explorer and Near Infinity at http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/IEmodding/index.php for extracting movies.

    Cutscenes in the games are just scripted events more or less though, so they're not movies that could be extracted. All the actual movies are usually stored in the same place.

    Do you know anything that could work for other PC games, say Blizzard games: Warcraft 2-3, Starcraft, Diablo 1-2?

    I know the collector's edition of Diablo II had a bonus DVD that had all the movie cut scenes on it for hte original...

    You could use the screen capture programs which people use to record play. Often they're used by speed runners, so one shouldn't be too hard to track down.

    Each company uses different formats for both the movie files and (if they use them) container files, so you'll have to hunt separate programs for each set of games you want.

    Blizzard uses Smacker, developed by RAD (same people who developed Bink) for (I think) all their games. You'll need an MPQ viewer and extractor to get the video files out of the .mpq files first. I remember doing this for Starcraft, but there's no reason it shouldn't work for the others.

    Warcrafts and Starcraft come with an editor which you can use to extract pretty much everything. For Diablos, you'll need to look at fan-made stuff.

    Yeah, for Warcraft3, you have to do this same thing. Use the MPQ viewer and extractor to find the files. Fortunately, there's a file called "filelist.txt" in the MPQ that you can extract first that shows you all the files in the MPQ. And, if memory serves, the video files are also .mpq files too.

    I can watch the WC3 movie files without converting them in Windows Media, but only as long as WC3 is installed on the computer. Company protection policies annoy me :D
