-- What makes an RPG a succes or a hit ?

-- If you get to create a new system for an RPG how would it be ?

-- How should the next RPG be ?
    - races (how many and what)
    - class (how many and what)
    - setting
    - combat system
    - Stat and Skill distribution system
    - Story (I think the obselete "save the world" theme already bore us all)

What makes an RPG a hit - good story, challenging combat, interesting characters (NPC's), replayability.

New RPG system - actually, I kind of like the AD&D rules (2nd edition; I don’t have any experience with 3rd Edition yet, but that looks interesting too). However, there is one thing I would like changed, and that would be to move to a mana-based system for spell casting. In BG2, I tend to use magic only when ‘regular’ (ie. melee or missile) combat fails. I find that I often won’t have enough of the right spells memorized, and resting is a pain; the sorcerer is better in some regards, but the problem is the limitation on the number of spells you can learn, and eventually you still have to rest. I realise that there is general consensus that the sorcerer can be very powerful, but I would still prefer a mana-based system. Of course, there would have to be a fair amount of re-balancing done to keep the spell casters from becoming over-powered.
The other things that would be nice would be to gain stat points on level-up (with lower starting maximums, of course), and a system for randomly-generated equipment drops like in Diablo. I guess, bottom line is a kind of a Dialbo/Baldurs Gate hybrid.
(Hmm, this post is closly related to my post here .)

As far as story-line goes, "save the world" is OK. For me, as long as the journey is interesting, that's enough.

Edit: fixed link which broke when topic moved from Whatnots to Playground

[IMG] I think a brilliant story-line you can get involved and feel you are able to be your character properly.

I think it should have complex actions, doing something (or not) will effect something else.

I think there should be a fair number of races and classes, it makes it interesting. In the real world there are many different people and many different ways people live. It should be reflected in an RPG as well.

I think settings should vary. What is stopping you from exploring lands away from where you started? You may want to travel elsewhere to build on fame or escape an unfavourable reputation or the law.

Combat should be more realistic and more... urgent, a wrong step or missed hit could cost you while a well placed blow could save your skin.

Stats, skills and proficiencies should improve as your character does - when they level or discover more about themselves or the world around them, by pleasing gods or completing quests in a certain way.

A story should be detailed and involving. Saving the world? Most games make it so you must save it. Why though? Maybe your character hates the world and would like to see it destroyed, and insteda sits in a bar drinking. Stories should give opportunites for every person.

For some of these things I though some rulesets didn't make it real, that's why I wrote my own :rolling:

Hmm, methinks a space RPG would be interesting. There don't seem to be many new ones of those around.

Engaging storyline, unique adventures, and easy to understand gameplay, plus replayability.

-I like the 3rd Edition ruleset. My new system for RPG would be based on that (ability score, AC, saving throw, etc) but eliminating the feats thingie (it's so unrealistic). Proficiency will develop with Characters habit and preferences (like dungeon siege's way but not entirily the same)
-The implementation of Time. if village A is burning and need help you don't go to the tavern and a have a drink first, cause if you do the village would burned itself to the ground. This feature will also be accompanied by bg2/iwd2 pause anywhere system.
-Enemy level will always be around your characters level. With variation of course. Bosses will be hard but not impossible.
If not, Diablo II's multiple difficulty level (Normal, Nightmare, and Hell) with item upgrade also serves as a good replacement.
-The battlefield should be in Warcraft 3's real time 3d with controllable dynamic camera.
-You get to create how your character looks. Tony Hawk pro skater and WCW 2 character creation screen comes to mind.
-Most item would be randomly generated, self forge/create, and will be exactly displayed when weared.

    @ Alurith:
Thanks for the heads-up; link is fixed. This is off-topic, but it's your topic, and you asked (not that I think that matters). To create a link to a web page, go to the page you want to link to, highlight the address, press Ctrl-C. When you are posting a topic, create the link by pressing the URL button (just below the Add Reply button); press Ctrl-V in the first screen, the second screen allows you to enter text which will be how the link is described in your post. If you want to link to a specific post in an SP forum, go to the post you want to link to and click the icon to the left of the "posted" date; that will change the http address to include that specific post.

"Good gameplay, graphics, sounds..." Blaa blaa... the regular ones... More specifically:

    • Graphics: Cel-shading or something similar to make the overall look cartoonish, but with LOTS of detail -everything made dynamic and living (E.g: hay waving in the wind, trees fall if chopped with axe.)
    • Sound: NO static sounds -dynamic enviroment, dynamic sounds. And a lot of them. Music only if there actually is someone playing it (although battle music would be OK).
    • RPG: Something of an mix of Final Fantasy 6 and AD&D (slots and profiences, not just maniac levelling up, but not too complex either). Battles FF style (but without gigantic swords, massive planets falling from the sky to hit your enemies, or ridicilously long, un-skippable summon animations.
    • Story: Original. Romances. 3 women. Sex. And a shining car. :D But really; enough lenght and amusement to twine the mind, some freedom a la BG would be OK too.
    • Misc: No 14-16 heroes. It's ludicrous that some 14-year old child could battle against building sized monsters. Realism.
Blah. Maybe I will make this game myself after I graduate. ;)
