[IMG] Way off topic, I know. But I'm interested in developing a mod for IWD2. The one question I have is now that Black Isle & Interplay are gone, who owns the intellectual property rights for the content of the game? As in, the tilesets, animations and music files.

The Infinity Engine itself, I realize is a Bioware thing. And the D&D rules are Wizards of the Sword Coasts property.

    Any suggestions? Thoughts?

Interplay is still technically alive but even the Icewind Dale games disappeared from Interplay's list of games along with the Baldur's Gate saga some time before eviction and laying off everyone except Herve Caen and a couple of guys. It's probably safe to refer to Interplay if you have to refer to someone, but that would be it.

Hmmm...... I realised something when trying to update BG II. The link is still http://www.interplay.com/bg2throne/
even though it is actually on the Bioware homepage. Guess no one at Bioware thought of changing even that through a patch. So it would probably be safe enough to refer to Interplay, whatever you´re planning.

What are you planning to do? People have been making mods for years now and this is the first time that IPRs are being discussed. What are you planning, pray tell?

Yeah, you aren't infringing on anyone's copyrights if you make a mod for a game. Sometimes they prohibit such activity, but surely this isn't the case with Icewind Dale 2, as there have already been mods. If you just want something to put in the disclaimer in readme.txt, then perhaps download an already made mod and see what they have in the relevant section... if at all.

I tried contacting Interplay through their "new" website contacts list, but no reply.

It's not actually a mod, more of a game engine. Not an exact clone as I won't be using the D&D ruleset or using the Forgotten Realms setting. Unfortunately I'm not an artist nor a music composer, so I don't have a lot of my own content that I can use in order to produce a technical demo. If I get no joy, I'll start asking around the mod community for freelance content.

Of course, like a lot of my "projects" it might lose steam and never get off the ground...

Even if anyone at Interplay would reply to your mails, such a request would certainly be denied. No sane game company (even a bust one) would give anyone permission to use any assets for free. After Interplay tanked, Obsidian bought some such resources from them. So there's no way you'd get permission to use anything for free.
