I have often read that you can dual-class the paladin and fighter, with the main reason being for the four fighter levels needed for weapon specialization. I attempted this with my paladin in the way that it was suggested, 1 fighter level for every 2 paladin, but I was unable to go back to paladin after my fighter level.

What is the correct way to multi-class the paladin? Must I do the four levels of fighter first, then switch to paladin? Or was I correct in going 2-for-1? If so, then why could I not continue in paladin?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can't be a paladin of Mystra or Illmater if you wants to be a fighter, too.

That solves my question. Bender the Pained was a paladin of Illmater. Back to the drawing board.

    Thank you much.

Wait, you can take four paladin levels and *then* take whatever paladin order you wish with the same effect (only it's no longer wise to get more levels as fighter - but after 4 levels it's not an even trade-off for paladins). My next paladin will probably be paladin of Mystra started as fighter (4 levels) and maybe some other class added.

Roleplaying-wise it fits the idea of paladin as sort of prestige class and generally someone very young finding his vocation on his way or, if you prefer, someone embracing paladinhood closer to his middle age after a rogueish/mercenary youth.
