Whenever I try and connect to my friends' IP address, the game fails.
Is it just his connection? (we both have high speed)
    thanks

i had a similar problem just recently when connection via msn messenger ... when we entered the ip address in manually and didnt use msn we were able to get a good connection ... it could also be down to firewall settings blocking the connection

This is most likely a firewall issue. I recently had some annoying problems due to this.

Are you or your friend connected through a Router? If so you'll need to configure the port forwarding on your Router to allow traffic to flow past the firewall.

If you have a Software firewall (for example something like Zone Alarm or Nortons firewall), thats a lot more simpler to configure.

Post back if you still have trouble.

BG2 won't work in multiplayer if you or your friend have an IP starting with 192.168. which is standard for a router, port forwarding would probably work, of course, this is if any of you have a router. Or you can use Hamachi, which is a handy little program that emulate a LAN connection, giving you a fake IP, I had to use that to play BG2 online as I got a router and it worked.

Me and a friend have a similar problem. We tried Hamachi, created a network and got it to display us on each other's screens, but BG2 - no dice. Ideas, anybody?

Well, open Hamachi, connect to the network, open BG2, then in multiplayer you need to select TCP/IP as protocol and use the IP Hamachi gives your friend to connect to the game (if he's the one who started it), IPX won't work for some reason when Hamachi is opened.

Hamachi was created for filesharing as primary purpose, not for gaming, but it is useful for that as well. You just can't load a game from it, you just need to leave Hamachi opened and then play the game normally as if the program wasn't there.

That's what we've done, but the game says cannot connect.

Edit: We got it to work. The problem was apparently my firewall.
