Many people complains about the impossibility of backstabbing main characters,as they speak and discover you. Here's a trick that uses to work. Haste your thief, equip him with a girdle of giant strenght or potion, preferably fire giant's and as soon as your chat is finished with the main character, flee the room, you should manage to get out of vision range for a few seconds, then hide in shadows. Results are pretty spectacular when you use a Katana-I used Celestial Fury- and achieve a critical hit on a backstab. I killed Bodhi with a "scratch" of 182 damage points. Also,it's possible to knock Irenicus down with a punch. All you have to do is to wait until his absolute immunity spells expires-This only serves in the first battle, not in Hell- and punch him. I got him unconscious and whacked him to death ruthlessly. I don't know why but Monks can't knock him down, only unarmed fighters.

I didn't think that thieves could use strength girdles.

    They can.

But there is no Girdle of Fire Giant Strength in the game. The best you can opt for is Frost Giant.
