I have no problem with high stats because the other Bhaalspawn apparently have high totals, too. Imoen has 87 and Sarevok has a whopping 95 with 18/00 STR to boot. I usually start with 90 and add a few points for the tomes in BG1.

93 was my best roll in BG1, but nowadays I don't have the time to reroll for high stats so I just SK 'em.

I think that the main character doesn't really need bonuses from all those tomes from BG1. If I want to have high stats, I usually just use ctrl + 8 and lower them to 90 or so.

And, it's true, that it is easier to get good scores with some classes. For example rangers have minimum strength and dexterity 13, constitution and wisdom 14, so it's quite easy to roll good ones.

It could be fun to try weaker character some time (not rerolling ability scores at all)

I think it could be fun to roll for a character and allow for rerolling in the spirit that your primary stats should be appropriate to the class you are playing, but not allowing for the readjustment of points after the roll, so you can re-roll, but you must take the first natural roll that is reasonably applicable.

It would be nice if the system were complex enough to allow for a wider range of solutions to various problems. That would make the above option much more interesting, because ability scores would significantly change the game. For example, the solution to a problem is going to be significantly different for two warriors whose INT scores are on different ends of the spectrum.

Back to my original topic for the post, I just started a new BG1 game using Tutu, so my ability rolls are a bit higher than just playing with vanilla BG1. I have found that actually starting at level 1 in the BG2 rules engine makes those high ability scores dramatically more useful, as the bonuses received can be the difference between living and dieing.

You could also try it like the old PnP way. You have to take the rolls that you are given, but you can swap each individual roll between stats, but can't +/- any roll. An example might make more sense ...

    Example:

    Str-9
    Dex-12
    Con-17
    Int-15
    Wis-8
    Cha-18

You could swap these rolls between stats to become

    Str-18
    Dex-15
    Con-17
    Int-9
    Wis-8
    Cha-12

    I got an

    St-14
    De-18
    Co-18
    In-18
    Wi-18
    Ch-12

On a sorcerer the other day. Of course, it HAD to be on my friend's game, so the character isn't even on my computer. But that roll made me happy. For me it is a 38, not a 98, though...I put all my stats at at least 10, so I subtract 60 from the full roll.

I really must say, the best rolls you will ever get are on a Ranger. And I get better rolls on BG1 generally, so I roll there, SK each stat by one (I always know where the tomes are in BG1), then import into BG2.

There are three Tomes of Wisdom in BG, so if you do your characters that way you might as well increase the Wis score by three.

    Who says I don't? :)

Just so happens that the cleric always seem to die shortly thereafter. ;)
