Need opinions please. I've finished the game, and after two months and a couple hundred hours of probably the best game I've ever played, I've decided to give it a rest before maybe re-playing on INSANE difficuly!
I NEVER played BG I. It was obviously a revolutionary game at the time, but if I go to it now, am I in for a big disappointment being that the technology is two years old? Should I maybe skip BG I and try out BG I - TOSC???

TotSC is the expansion for BG1; the technology was essentially unchanged...

I wouldn't find BG1 a letdown, but the graphics have never been the most important thing for me in gaming...

Personally, I thing the original had a more cohesive and [relatively] believable storyline.

And what's so difficult to believe about a fallen elf and his Vampire sister stealing the souls from you and your step-sister so they can become gods?

Thanks for the feedback, keep it coming. I'll probably end up with BGI by holiday's end, and I just want to brace myself for the lack of side quests and linearality (is that a word?) that I've heard about.

BG1 has even more side quests than BG2. But most of them are irritating fed-ex duties.

    LOL warlord...

when you put it that way...

I though BG2 had more sidequests, only they had a little more meat to them. Really, the D'Arnise Hold, Trademeet, Umar Hills were all just big sidequests. None of them were neccessary to beat them game (not directly, anyway).

    *still laughing*

I agree Beorn. Although Baldur's Gate 1 was good for its time, I found all the "extra" quests and frolicking through fields of flowers chasing down butterflies in the buck a little dull and boring. In fact, it almost killed my desire to continue playing BG1.

Baldur's Gate 2 to compare has "extra" quests but they do have meaning. It gives the world depth and a vibrance that was missing from BG1. The "extra" quests in BG2 may not be as high as they were in BG1, but they are longer and have reason to them.

"Can you fetch my boots from my house? They're in a room full of spiders that moved in and I'm so terrified of them!"

    vs

"Please! Help me! My home is has been assaulted by a large force of Trolls who have taken over the land and the place I live. Your reward will be well worth your efforts and if you accept, I can show you the secret entry point into the main keep!"

    BG2 all the way.

    Syl...

Warlord: I'd skip BG1 - which is inferior to BG2 with its busywork quests, lack of kits and scroll cases, and lesser graphics - and instead try Icewind Dale, which is as good as BG2 in a lot of ways - especially the atmosphere and graphics. Sure, it doesn't have kits or scroll cases either, but it compensates in other ways. And you create and control an entire party in IWD, not just one character.

Thanks for advice, but too late! IWD is what introducted me to this game engine. I'm looking forward to the add-on, Heart of Winter, but this doesn't come out until mid to late January. The way I now figure it, if I don't expect that much from BGI, then I probably won't be that disappointed.
    Thanks

I have to say for the record that I liked the game play of the original better than that of BG2. The "fedex" quests don't bother me in the least, and they seem more realistic than the drove of "save the world" quests in BG2.

It has to be that way though, because the low level parties in BG couldn't possibly handle any of the bigger quests in BG2 and the fedex quest in the original would just be a waste of time for the high level parties in the sequel.

BG was the first RPG I'd ever played other than Diablo (gag me), and what got me hooked. Perhaps it's the sentimentality, but I still like BG better.

I gotta a feeling BG will be somewhat of a letdown. After heving such a high level party, I don't know if I'd like striving for a 8th level fighter with the best you could get being a +2 sword(unless you kill Drizzt...I tried to tell him In BG2 I had to do it for the swords, I just had too!!!!!!!!). Anyway, in retrospect, all the walking through the woods was stupid. I really like the more linear plot line of the sequal. And they could have cut out more of the "fetch this" quests if they would have given more experience points for things. I mean, look how quickly your party advances up into the millions of exp in BG2 and how long you strived for a hundred thousand in the first. As for the plot of BG, for the first few chapters, I thought it was stupid. What's so great about stopping the Iron Bandits? Later it got better, a little better. At least it started to add some storyline. There's something nice about the epic plot of the sequal, but I just started chapter six, and the plot could be a little better.
