I never got really far yet in BGII. I keep going back to BGI and then Icewind Dale when I get the expansion pack in October when the bundle comes out.
I've been hearing a lot of talk about romances with various characters and something about strongholds. I've never really seen much of this mentioned in the manual. (Like most manuals really ever cover everything) Where can I go to get more information on these two topics? I'd like to know a little more about them before I really get into the game.

    Strongholds:
Are different places that you get through some quests depending on your character general class (fighter, mage, Thief, Ranger, Etc...)
when you get them, you can save things in them and you get some special quests about them and the people that live there or works for you...
you also get some money or objects, depending on your stronghold and the decisions you take about them.
    Romances:
You can have them only with the PC's when they are in your party. I think there are 2 for woman and 3 for men. They are only simple dialogs, and in my opinion, they don't have major relevance until chapter 5 late in the game.

[IMG] I believe that only certain races can participate in the romances though. Human, Halfling, Elf, Half-Elf?
Please correct me if this is wrong.

So really the best way to find out about them is to just play through and learn as I go?

[IMG] I won't spoil anything in terms of which character can have romance, but it is possible for all races to have them, excluding dwarves. (They don't need romance, just a bloody axe; [I am quoting someone here, although I don't know who, sorry])

While true, there are "restrictions" based on race. Male gnomes, for example, can only romance one specific NPC so if she isn't in your party, there will be no romance. Also, a female PC has only one romance possibility. On that thread, the female PC cannot be a gnome.

BTW, half-orcs also do not have any romance opportunities.

Half-Orcs were supposed to be able to romance Viccy, but that never happened.

There is one romance for females.

There are guides and such that explain them, but yeah, the best way is to play the game.
