    Possible spoiler?

    I just completed the Mae-Var (correct spelling) quest - killing him and his followers! but I thought I would get the sword in question from Renal Bloodscalp? At least I think I got that item from previous times that I have played. If its relevant I have all patches installed along with 'dungeon be gone' and 'unfinished business'.

    Please advise.

    Unless I am mistaken this is because of a mod. I always assumed it to be Ease of Use. Bloodscalp put me in charge of the Guild, but didnt hand over the sword with EoU installed.
    Instead I found the Short Sword of Backstabbing on Aran Linvail's corpse when I killed him while employed by Bodhi.

    The only advise I have to offer here. :)

    Renal does not give you the sword if you get the guild instead. If you are a thief, or installed the portion of the EoU mod that gives you all strongholds, you won't get the sword. You either get offered the sword, or the guildhouse, not both.

    I forget which mod but I had one that altered the gift from Renal to a simple +3 sword (although thats what the backstabbing sword is) and equips renal with an upgraded version of the original gift. You can kill Renal as it also disabled Arkanis.

    @Malovae The mod you are talking about is Rogue Rebalancing Mod (i think). A very nice mod if you ask me. Removes thos dumb effects on Bounty Hunters traps and replace with new cool ones. Also some nice changes to the Bard class!

    The console code for the Short Sword of Backstabbing is sw1h10. But anyways, Cutthroat is a better short sword.

    If you ask Aran Lindvail for help in chapter 6, he sends Arkanis Gath to help defeat Bodhi and he also gives you the sword. This is only for thieves.
