I've always backstabbed them to death. By the 4th chapter, I usually have enough potions of invisibility to use liberally. Stab one, drink up, wait for next round, and repeat. This is one of the reasons I like Valygar so much :p .

I was flipping through this thread again and noticed something that should be corrected. Khemsa, you are just a bit off in your reason for not using Death Spell on Flayers. They do resist the spell, but not because of their Hit Dice--they have 8, which is the maximum for Death Spell to still work. The problem is that they have 90 Magic Resistance. You can toss a few death spells and hope a few die as a last ditch effort against them.

Of course, you are right about using Death Spell on the Mind Flayers escorting Phaere in the Underdark. They have 0 Magic Resistance.

Squid heads are not all that hard, once you get the hang of them.
A big "Me Too!" on the Mordy Swords, for large groups of Flayers, cast a Improved Haste on one before sending it off to fight. Once the Squids are engaged on the swords, others (Protected by Chaotic Commands or a Potion of Clarity) can add in missle fire with little threat of Int. drain.
They are not immune to poison, so Darts of Wounding, and Bolts or Arrows of Biting are great for them.
The 5th level Mage spell Sunfire will bypass magic resistance on targets, and is therefore useful, especially with Boots of Speed and the Staff of the Magi - Run in, "poof", fade out, run away.
Death Spell isn't much good on Squids, but works wonders for clearing out Umber Hulks.
Invisible Stalkers also work OK against them, though Mordy's Swords are still better.
Item Upgrade Mod has Improved Lliricor, which blocks Int Drain, and the Tower of Iron Will helm, which protects against Psionics.
Lastly, ToB level Mages and Sorcs can use Dragon's Breath or Comet to hit them.

Have fun, and enjoy the Kalamari,

    Deuce

Every round or so you should check your int score - if it is getting low just scull a potion of genius, or whatever.

I agree with Ekarderif. Backstab is the easiest way to kill a Mind Flayer. My solo F/M/T is using the Celestial Fury and the Staff of Magi.

I sneak into the room, backstab, change to the SoM, than go outside, change to CF, hide, sneak back, backstab, etc, etc, etc... And if they are combined with Umber Hulks I start with a cloudkill...

Actually I would start with a clodkill anyway. The wand of cloudkill seems to ignore magic resisance of mind flayers and generally tends to do quite a lot of damage (plus get rid of the umber hulks straght away). Cheese?

    I use this combination:
Chaotics Commands+Potion of Genius(POG)+Potion of Invunerability(POI)+Party with ranged weapons = Illithids City conquered.
With the psionic atack must to make a save against the spells, it´s because you use the POI, if you failed the POG help you to not died so fast.
I hope this help to you.

AFAIK, Vukodlak's advice is pretty sound. The Wand Of Cloudkill ignores MR, so just cast Chaotic Commands on a lead character, have them open the door, use the wand, slam it shut and wait. CC will stop everything except the INT drain, which is virtually unavoidable; even Mirror Image didn't work for me.

Of course, if you can cast Mordekainen's Sword, don't waste any more time than you have to. Also, IIRC the Illithids guarding Phaere and the Illithid Master Brain IS vulnerable to Death Spell, as they're eight-HD monsters (and Phaere's ones count as summoned - instant kill with Death Spell).

The Greenstone Amulet i think it's called protects against psionics along with pretty much everything but thats only for a limited time ad they only have one charge. however there is a bug where they give all their protections as long as they're equipped. other than that bezerkers or Mordy's swords do the trick.

@ NonSequitur: As I said earlier, though it may have been missed, ALL mind flayers are 8 HD creatures. It's just that the ones guarding Phaere have 0 magic resistance, while the others have 90.

@NonSequitur: There is a problem with that. The Mind Flayers are gathering than to the door and next time when you would open it, to launch an another cloud kill they attack you immediately...
Other hand Mind Flayer is a clever beeing, I dont think with INT 25 they could not open a simple door. You should try the tactics mod.

I usually take them down with bows. And if I'm bored, I let Skeleton Warriors gather the experience.
