I was wondering how many people use the EnableCheatKeys() cheat to either teleport your party, or instant kill anoying foes...any other cheats count too, just list what you use below. I would also like to know what got you addicted to cheating. :rolling:

I don't use cheat codes, but I will reload a tough battle if my party gets really hammered.

This topic is a bit biased. People like me (who do advanced scripting and the like) don't cheat, we manipulate, so you can't really ask a question like that to a person like me. Although using the CluaConsole: in BG2 to cheat was what got me into it... :( And no I'm not addicted to cheating, I had been through the game multiple times before finding out that there was such a thing as the CluaConsole: hehe... well, thats my opinion.

That about sums it up, thanks for readin' y'all!

[IMG] I voted Yes, but I dont use the console, I removed the experience cap. and solod through the game. I suppose that is still cheating even though I earned everything.

I voted yes. I save/load a lot if anyone dies. I removed the experience cap. Hmm... maybe I made the wrong vote.

Definitely a Yes, but only after completing the game regulary. I used ShadowKeeper to give me some items but nothing more. No XP boosts.

[IMG] I use the cheats to test my mods. And to create something if it was somehow lost/destroyed/chewed up

I also downloaded two mods that I later discovered were not compatable meaning my laptop got a bug :flaming: removed the bug and had to use the cheats to summon back a few things.

I have never used the CLUA console so I voted no. However, I do re-roll my characters until I am happy with them and will reload if my party gets decimated by a foe (i.e. one or more characters die). I don't consider this cheating though because if I spend hours re-rolling, I have earned by ability scores and to not reload when you get your butt kicked could have you going through Irenicus dungeon over and over. How would it be to solo through to the Asylum and then get killed by one of those insta-death traps. Are we supposed to start over or be considered a cheater. I think not, but I am sure some purists would consider that a cheat.

Why does re-rolling count as cheating? The system was specifically designed to allow re-rolling and the creation of uber-characters by crashing unnecessary stats (i.e., charisma for most characters). IMO this isn't cheating, it's taking advantage of the system. You could just as easily say partaking of the knowledge on this board is cheating (i.e., how many different times have people posted on such topics as "How do I kill Kangaxx, etc.?).

In any event, I did not cheat the first time I played the game (or any game for that matter). Now, when I feel like playing a game of BG2, I generally given my characters the following items solely out of impatience: everyone gets boots of speed (I can't stand waiting for them to cross the map) and someone gets a bag of holding (because I hate inventory management and, having played the game several times, could do the inventory management if I felt like it). That's it. No extra experience, no massive weapon/equipment outfitting at the beginning, no instant millionaires, no monk/sorcerer/paladins with all 25's, etc.

Well, I voted "no" because I've never used CLU... erm... that 'console' thingy everybody talks about.
I don't use 'fake talk' or lay hundreds of traps.

Before you start muttering "paladin" out there, I confess that I will replay a bad fight if my party gets hammered.

    I also compromised on pickpocketing.
The problem is that the whole town goes permanently red if you fail one pickpocket. I think we all agree it would be pretty hard to finish the game with the whole of Athkatla chasing you through the streets with torches and pitchforks. :flaming: :flaming: :flaming:
The alternative is to never pickpocket anybody, but I like playing thieves.
So I made a rule: I can try to pickpocket anybody. If they catch me I reload the game and never try to pickpocket them again. Does that sound fair? :aww:

Perhaps the next Baldur's Gate could allow the townsfolk to cool down after a couple of days - proving you manage to escape the angry mob and get out of town.

    Anyway, that's my two cents.

Wow...you guys consider a lot of things as "cheating". I don't think re-rolling, or re-loading the game, or even the use of mods, cheating. To me the word cheat, means to make easier with out sacrifice. With re-rolling, and re-loading, you sacrifice your time...with mods, most of them make the game harder, or longer, so they are technicly the opsite of cheating. When I say cheating, I mean: CLUAConsole:SetCurentXP("50000000")
    That is cheating. :rolling:

That's basically the way I feel in most games. Granted, I do keep one or two items from BG that I can't get otherwise, such as Varscona, or the Practical Plate. I have also been known to use that thing with Skull Trap where thay don't disappear after resting. Especially against those guys right berore The Imprisoned One. :D (Is that even a bug?)

Sometimes for fun I just make an uber-character with max XP and solo through the game. I use the console, when I have lost some items usually. Nothing else. And I don't think that the use of mods is cheating.

[IMG] I played through the games thrice with only the usual "cheats" (reroll stats, reload if spell not properly scribed).

Now I'm cheating all the time, because it's fun and makes me experience the game in another way.

I roll extensively when creating a BG-2 char, more I even played extensively rolled chars through BG-1 and imported them into BG-2 :D However, that isn't cheating IMO.

In the game I don't cheat, it would be way to easy (since I still know most of the game and the quests by heart anyway). Never soloed though for I can't really see a point in ever repeating hide and seek patterns necessary with a FMT or a similar char.

[IMG] If an item mysteriously dissapears eg: nalia's ring when she dies and is brought back to life then I create it, after all, you're supposed to be able to recover all the items from the dead character.
Re rolling stats? Yep I do that, and as a DM I allow my players to do so at my discretion.
My Shadow keeper use is limited to editing certain NPC stats for consistency, Like adding an extra Wis point to a character I gave aTome of Wisdom to in BG. I like consistancy in stories, and it helps make a good DM :p .

Shadowkeeper, shadowkeeper ... that reminds me, I create otherwise impossible custom race-class and multiclass combos, like halfling paladins and halfling archers, or thief-diviners but since the chars are completely legit otherwise it's not cheating but a modification of the game.

[IMG] Hm, getting 3rd ed multiclassing, or at least a style of it would be nice. Has it caused any bugs Ragusa?

Not when done properly ;) A brief guide:
    • Pre-generate a character in the multiplayer char generation screen and export him (it is important the char has not been imported into a game before - this will avoid bugs that would appear when editing a ready char
    • Open the .chr file in Shadowkeeper (Ex will curse me for typing that but for this purpose SK is pretty handy)
    • Edit in what you'd like, such as ...
      • the kit you'd like your char to have or
      • change avatar and appearance or
      • change race
    • Save and import it in the normal game - on creation the abilities will be generated, thus avoiding bugs that might appear when exporting a ready char out of the game and editing it
These are the only things I used SK for. For me it always worked well.
