How do you manage proficiency points?

For fighter types, I tend to stack as many points as possible on one weapon first before investing on a secondary weapon or fighting styles.

For other classes, I put more emphasis on defense, so sword & shield style or single weapon style (+1 AC) get points before flail or longsword.

I don't think it matters too much - I nearly always choose at least 1 point in longsword for anyone who can handle one since there are so many good longswords in the game - also duel-wield because almost everyone does it (although it isn't always the most effective way to fight).

    My starting Paladin has

    Longsword +
    Katana +
    Two-Handed Sword ++
    Two-Handed Weapon style +
    Duel-Wield Weapon Style +

Admittedly a fair spread but at the start of the game it doesn;t matter too much... first extra point I get goes in duel-wield style to erase all penalties with the main hand weapon (i think!)

I'm mostly using dual wield, and allocating at least 2 points to the weapon of choice (+1/2 attack). So the starting allocation is like :

2 stars melee weapon of choice
    2 stars ranged weapon
    2 stars dual wield

The next point goes always to the 3rd star for dual wield.

    Paladin / Ranger :
Depending on the character usage I am later either selecting other one hand weapon, or two handed sword, later allocating the stars for 2H specialisation.

    Fighter :
Maxing the selected melee weapon type, after that selecting 2nd weapon preference.

[IMG] It really depends on your playing style and the classes in volved doesn't it?

This time round my F/T has the following thus far:

    Short sword **
    Long sword *
Katana * (Yoshimo just looked cool with his ;) )
    Short bow *
    Dual weild ***

If was a different class, or indeed I decided on a different 'look' to my character then it would look radically different. Perhaps we should have poll's or at least a thread on favoured weapons weapons for different classes and see what everyone thinks? :)

I (playing fighter or F/T) like to have one in an edged weapon, one in a blunt weapon and one in a ranged weapon before I put them in anything else.

I try to decide what role the character will play and stay committed to it throughout the game. For front-liners, I usually have one dual wield and one shield and sword style to make use of the shields you come across. Make sure you have some proficiency in blunt weapons (flail, mace and hammer recommended) to take down golems, and for using mace of disruption, flail of ages and crom faer. Commit another fighter type or thief to bows. I like to have an archer with proficiency in long bows (5*) and two handed weapons (either 2H sword, staff or Halberd) so you don't have to switch a shield in when in melee. Definitely a good idea to have a couple with long sword proficiency to use Daystar and other good long swords. Oh Yeah, and have only one character with Katana proficiency for using Celestial Fury.
