"Munckins" and "power-gamers" vs. "nerds" and "geeks." Why are we gamers kind of split up in 2 camps like that? People have a tendency to say the other kind of gamers destroys or unbalances campaign after campaign. Has anyone really ever experienced that? In my eyes it seems like yet another excuse to pummel "newbies". But then again I may be wrong..? Or what?

Do not run away; let go. Do not seek, for it will come when least expected. (Bruce Lee)

Hey guy, I tend to avoid this debate (but I do not think "nerds" and "geeks" is the correct term). This is just your classic battle between D&D roleplayers and "pwer-gamers," and I do not think anyone wants to pommel newbies. I, for one, do not. I think this is just an occurence where newbies get caught in the crossfire, but I may be wrong...

It has been my experience (oh #@$!, im not starting this again, am I? please don't read anything into this) that your stereotypical Power Gamer has a tendency to brag. The role-players that hear their bragging and claims of invincibility feel an injustice in the fact that their 15th level Kensai 'd' Mage with a wicked story-line and a well-defined personality is for nothing because the Power Gamer has a 40th level hacked Sorcerer that could tear his character to pieces.

Because the role-player finds his entertainment in using their imagination and creating an in-depth scenario and the Power Gamer finds his entertainment in creating the best and greatest character, there becomes a clash in arguments. I find that most of the actual scuffles are a result of the Power Gamers bragging their characters and the role-players defending their (granted, inflated) pride by calling the Power Gamers cheaters and claiming the Power Gamer is missing the point of the game.

As an RP'er and witness to several friends who prefer Power-Gaming, I say there is more of an involvement, more room for imagination and fun in RP'ing. However, no one can force someone else to conform, so long as the other person is intelligent enough.

    To avoid this,
    Power Gamers: Stop bragging.
    Role-Players: Stop judging.

    Hehe...
