I am no longer an earthquake virgin! I experienced my first one last night while playing trivia with Tal and the gang! And I stayed at my computer while the earth shook!
Ok, it was a small one, 5 something. The epicenter was around Big Bear California, but the news said it was felt in Los Angeles and down near San Diego.
It happened around 4am and I went into the bedroom all excited to tell my wife we had an earthquake. She was a little annoyed but let it go because it was my first one. But she said if I ever wake her up in the middle of the night to tell her we had a small earthquake again, I'm dead. She grew up in California, so 5s are nothing, sleeps right through them.

    Congrats, Elios!

I wanted to make some kind of lewd comment here, but I find myself respectful of the Engluish language and stop myself making bad puns right now concerning sleeping and earth-shakibng experiences...

    (Who, me, weird?)

    Welcome to California, Elios.

This was just a small one too, hehe. Wait till the big one comes. And you shouldn't be staying up so late anyways.

    Are you joking???
Well i was sleeping when my family waked me up in 17 August 1999 03.00 o'clock in Turkey. The earthquake went for 45 seconds and it was 7.8 (in richter scale). 35000 people died .We slept in garden and in car for days...
Than after 2 months there was another one.It was 7.x and thousands of people died too.It was a horrible year, thousands of people died, their families left broken and their wifes widowed.
I ran to street after the earthquake with all my speed, shock and i was really frightened.
Hells i still remember, the day on the first earthquake was very strange, there were like millions of star in air and they were very near so that you could catch one if you want to. The stranger was the prophecies of Nostradamus said that the day later earthquake was judgement day.

I was in my first quake in spring 2001 - the one that happened up in Seattle and was felt all the way down to Portland, OR (where we were living at the time). I was in the car and thought I was having trouble with the ABS because the car was lurching forward and back, kind of on a diagonal.

My son was almost 1 yr old, and slept through it at day care, even when they put two other babies into his crib so they could all evacuate!

A 5.0 earthquake is nothing compared to the 6.7 Northridge quake that hit Northridge a number of years back...It was in the early 90's. Freeways fell on other freeways, fires everywhere, buildings collapsed...I'll remember that night for the rest of my life. I was staying at my grandma's house which *was* about 5 miles south of Northridge.

Here are some pics of the damage:
    Freeway Colapses
    More Freeway Problems
    Worst Freeway Damage
    Apartments No More

Now that was an earthquake! And to think, experts say that a massive quake is supposed to strike right next to Salt Lake City...I'll be waiting for it!!! :rolling:

As long as you're not in a shoddy building, earthquakes are a neat experience. I was in a small one too in California.

Please, I don't want anyone to think I was making light of the more serious earthquakes were people are killed. I apologize if I offended anyone.

I went through 2 earthquakes while I was in Japan, one of them being the huge one that hit Osaka in 1994. I was quite a ways away from the epicenter, so things just wiggled a bit and there was no damage around me. I was sure glad I wasn't near the epicenter, though.

    [IMG] Congrats!

I've lived in California all my life, and I have never experienced one. Of course, I live in Sacramento - where the Earth is quite stable.
