Hello fellows. I'm going to attempt to address some of the points of the last few posts.

Heavy metal is a combination of ideology, the classical ethos, expression of the epic, free will, nihilism, chaos, etc, and an aesthetic, as defined by Black Sabbath, the genre originators.

Nu-metal is an abomination having nothing in common with the true metal spirit.

Here is an FAQ, from the Amerikan Nihilist Underground Society:

    http://www.anus.com/metal/about/metal_faq.html

Also read for an explanation of black metal:

    http://www.raging-metal.d2g.com/columns/tfnw/0003.html

Death Metal's spirit is similar: nihilist destruction in the name of recreation and finding truth from nothingness.

Death and black metal are far more than 'grunty' metal. Other genres follow their own ideological precepts, while adhering to a common aesthetic and ideological basis.

ok i think i understand it (or maybe not but noone cares anyway ;) )

    my list (no particular order)

Led zeppelin. The godfathers of metal and one of the best bands ever!

Deep purple. another godfather (or godmother) just listen to child in time if you need reasons

Guns n'Roses. Nice band (not so much the metalnr but anyways)

    Apocalyptica. Metal on cello! whee!

Within temptation (the older cd's not the new comercial stuff) enter all the way!

actually i don't listen to metal that much anymore. but it's great if you have a bad day!

I agree with Intentioner of the Damned. Dream Theater, even not being a full metal band, is so great it deserves a honor place here.

I also like most of the bands mentioned here, but my votes go for Iron Maiden, Metallica & Gamma Ray (hey, I'm a classic)

And last, but not least, my 2nd fave metal band (though it's more progressive metal than metal): Pain Of Salvation

I'd disagree that DT ain't metal. It really is metal, especially up to A Change Of Seasons. But, note the word 'Progressive' infront the 'Metal' one...
Other than that, many bands mentioned would not be metal. Especially the nu-bred ones...

If I should choose five, that would be, in no-order

    Dream Theater
    Iron Maiden
    Symphony X
    Therion
Nightwish? Blind Guardian? - list goes on and on...

    Let´s see:
    Classics:
    Ozzy
    DIO
    Saxon
    Iron Maiden
    Black Sabbath

    Melodic:
    Blind Guardian
    Gamma Ray
    Demons and Wizards

    Power Metal:
    Running Wild
    Iron Savior
    Rage
    Grave Digger

    Death/trash/black:
    CANNIBAL CORPSE!!!!
    Death
    Dimmu Borgir
    Manegarm
    Testament
    Slayer

That's the best I can do, I can't really say my top 5 of all metal, because it depends on my mood.
