[IMG] Hey guys, I wanna make a new char, but not on my usual powergaming lines. I want something different, unusual, and fun to play. Something with a weird combination of classes (ex. Assassin/Sorcerer), but still effective. I'm planning to beat both SoU and HotU with this character, but most importantly it must be REFRESHING and FUN. C'mon, fire away your suggestions. Also help me with what feats and skills should I choose.

If you want to go down the really really evil road: Wizard 3/Pale Master X/Blackguard 7: First take 3 levels Wizard, add the 10 levels Pale Master, then add 7 levels Blackguard and continue as Pale Master afterwards. The Blackguard levels are there to symbolize your submission to the dark forces your PM is calling upon.

This should be played somewhat like the Fighter/Mages from BG (but without the overpowerdness). You get a mix of decent melee and decent spellcasting. For feats take combat feats like Dodge, Epic Prowess... that don't focus on a particular weapon, just use what's at hand. Also try to mix in some "soft" spellcasting feats like combat casting, spell penetration... but try to avoid the feats that "enhance" your spells by memorizing them in higher spell slots, you have good casting abilities but not that good. (although extend spell might be worth it for the longer duration of your buffs since you'll be considered caster level 3 for the entire game considering the power of your spells).

Because of your low caster level, try to avoid spells that count to much on caster level, like Fireball and such. For abilities I'd suggest a decent mix like that of a Paladin except you exchange intelligence with wisdom. Don't forget to buy (if you don't find any) scrolls since you get spell slots at level up but you don't get to pick spells, like you would if you just advanced as wizard. And one last detail, although it isn't written anywhere, you continue to gain spell slots every odd level of Pale Master even after going epic.

A couple things to remember about the build Meatdog suggested. First off, he's right, the Pale Master will continue to gain spell slots for you, but you'll never get MORE spell slots that a maxed out Wizard, which is usually about 5/spell level before INT modifier and before your bonus spell if you choose a specialty school. Secondly, if you only take the three levels of Wizard, and then never level it up again, you'll never get higher than 2nd level spells. Pale Master adds slots, but not higher levels. Now, that said, if you mix in the odd Wizard level here and there throughout your level up process, you will get higher level spells this way. And an interesting side effect of the Pale Master is that , by mixing in wizard levels as you go, and not running straight through the PM class, you can get higher level spells than your wizard level would suggest (ie. if you run it right, you can cast 9th level spells with only 12 levels in wizard). This will work a bit differently if you want to throw some Blackguard in there though. The important thing to remember is, if you ONLY take those initial 3 levels of Wizard, you'll only be casting Cantrips, 1st and 2nd level spells.

This isn't true. Indeed, like I said, you don't get new spells to cast when you level up, but you can still learn those higher level spells from scrolls, even with only tree levels of wizard. Don't even try to convince me otherwise since I tested it myself with my version of the game (NWN + both expansions v1.61) and it works. The only reasons to take extra wizard levels are:
    1) you want your spells to be more powerfull
    2) you want to get access to the higher level spells faster
    3) you don't find a scroll anywhere with the spell you want to be able to cast

I think I know where your mistake came from. Unlike in BG you can't copy spells to your spell book before you have spell slots for that level. But once you have, you can simply buy/find the spells you want to cast and copy them to your book. The only spells you won't be able to cast are those that you can't buy or find (because they weren't included as scrolls in the module or because you're unlucky).

Actually, the spell scroll thing had nothing to do with it. It was simply a poorly worded explanation of how the PM's extra spell slots worked in the manual. Interesting. I went in to test what you said and your absolutely right. You gain higher spell levels more slowly than a pure Mage would, but that's to be expected. This is good to know.

I've tried the alternating class strategie with sorcerer (since they can't write spells in their memory like wizards). Bad news :( , it doesn't work. Although the spells per day increase, the spells known are still only calculated on your sorcerer levels. I suppose this also holds true for the Bard.

Oh well, there goes the Sorc/PM build. :D

Another build you might want to try is cleric/Red Dragon Disciple. If you make it a battle cleric, this will give you some use of the str, the con and int are good for any classes and the cha will help with turn undead. Whether you take one sorc or one bard level for RDD requirements depends on you, but for the bizare build, I'd say go with Bard. So this makes Cleric/Bard/Red Dragon Disciple. Or you could go evenly in Cleric and Bard. But I wouldn't take only one level of Cleric since that looks to powergamish IMHO.

Now that I think about it one level of Cleric has the same deficiency. So go evenly up in Cleric and Bard but at reaching character level 5, take a break from it with 10 levels RDD and then continue like you were, taking levels evenly between Bard and Cleric.

    What about a Barbarian x/Bard 1/ Dragon Disciple 10?

Also, could I have some tips on Rogue x/ Assassin 10/ Shadowdancer 10?

Sorc or Bard 1, Paladin x, RDD 10

It is a powergaming build, just turn the difficulty up all the way. It is fun seeing a guy with robes and wings running around tearing everything a new one with a talking longsword.

Alternatively, Bard X/Red Dragon Disciple 10/ Weapon Master 7 with Great Sword or Scythe as the chosen weapon.

RDD stat bonuses + Bard Song + Ki Damage + Ki Critical = Death.

You don't get as many attacks, but when you do, ouch.

[IMG] I was wondering if anyone has tried a wizard/fighter/arcane archer. Right now I'm a wizard 5/fighter 1, and an elf.

In regards to the above build, it's best if you do not take any levels in Arcane Archer or any more in Fighter.

Simply go Wizard all the way.

I currently have a Ranger 20/Wizard 1/Arcane Archer 2. I love the 1st level Wizard spell Shield; all those mages love to throw Magic Missiles at me, and Shield totally defeats them.
