Neverwinter Nights 2 appears to be coming soon, and I was wondering whether or not I should even bother playing this game first. I've heard it is good, but I don't want to waste my time if a newer version is coming out soon.

Will I need to play this to in order to understand NWN2? I never played BG1, but I love BG2 nonetheless... will it be similar, or what?

Should I play NWN1 or should I wait?

 

BG2 is party-based, basically, where in NWN you just take along 1 or 2 henchmen. It's the same setting, too. Since you love BG2 I'd just recommend it. I'm playing both games every day and I'm loving them to death.

 

But should I just wait for NWN 2?

And as a side note, are the graphics any good? I've not seen alot of screen shots, and I don't remember them well.

 

the official line is that NWN2 is scheduled for release sometime in 2006, potentially giving us more than a year to wait if atari holds the release back until, say next november, in order to capitalise on the traditional christmas rush; so on the face of it, NWN is probably worth picking up to idle away a few hours in the meantime - the original campaign is diverting enough, and when you finish with that, there’s always the thousands of high quality community created modules and persistent worlds out there to play

graphically, the game is showing its age a little, but that’s to be expected from a game that’s more than three years old now, and since there’s nothing else like NWN out there, you have to make a few allowances for the graphic engines limitations

It doesn't look like you're going to need to have played NWN1 to understand NWN2. But NWN1 is a good game, so go for it if you have some spare cash. According to the devs, NWN2 isn't going to be a replacement for NWN1 in the multiplayer area, so NWN1 is going to last, anyway.

 

You can buy NWN so cheap now, I don't see why you wouldn't buy it. It's pretty fun, and there's an emormous amount of player community-made content for it.

I don't think NWN2 is going to be a sequel to NWN like BG1 and BG2 were.

Also, as has been stated, NWN2 won't be out for quite some time. In fact, there aren't many new CRPGs coming out for awhile; yet another reason to pick up NWN.

 

NWN is worth buying even if you don't think you will play it eventually. I have played BG1, BG2 Planescape and some others but still NWN is among the 2 first (Planescape is the other for the storyline if nothing else).
