[IMG] I have had the Game since before crimbo but just have not had the chance to get it out of the box. I normally go as a fighter in bg1-bg2 but with having the option of making upto six charaters I am spoilt for choice. can anyone give any suggestions on what group i should go for??

Well for my first party i had fighter
paladin, thief, wizard, cleric and a druid but as i played the game more and more i found out that you didnt need a thief because if you have a fighter that is strong enough he can break locks open. Wizard can use "knock" spell etc... Paladins are good because you get a pale justice(cool Weapon) but on my 3 rd time through the game i had a a party of fighter, paladin, mage, cleric, druid and a fighter i am more of the warrior type person while in the other hand if you like wizrds more you could have 2 wizards it all depends on what you like.

I personally would not go for anything less that a pure cleric; there's lots of undead to be turned.

    I had:
    Paladin
    Ranger
    Fighter
    Cleric
    Illusionist/Thief
    Conjurer

Try not to have multi or dual class mages.
Go for pure mages. This way, it'll be a lot easier, trust me.

go with at least two fighter types..multi, dual or single...go with lots and lots of magic...a bard and a mage maybe...and if you have HOW...GO WITH A DRUID. The druid is incredible. I have a Ranger, Fighter/Cleric, Druid, Bard, Conjurer, and Illusionist/Thief. That means all 6 of my characters have spell ability...it's like a fireworks show.

    [IMG] My first party was

    Paladin
    Druid
    Fighter
    Cleric
    Bard
    Thief/Illusionist

The main problem was I multi-classed my mage and she went up SO slow. You don't really need a 'full' thief in IWD but I should have multi with my fighter. But there were still a great party.

It was a good group and finished HOW, too. I had a good group for all of the magic items you find and had managed proficiencies well to accomodate varied weapons. My only regret, which is also advice, is to include a few "evil aligned" characters because there are some evil only items that are good. Alignment doesn't matter so much, there isn't a rep factor and I think if you have a "good" leader you preserve dialogue options. Have fun.

Go with what you like...me, I like big thuggy fighters, but the other classes have good uses as well. I'm currently running two parallel games. The character mix is as follows:

    Party One: 3 fighters, 1 fighter/thief, 1 mage, and 1 cleric.

    Party Two: 2 fighters, 1 fighter/thief, 1 fighter/mage, 1 mage, and 1 cleric

I'm starting to regret the f/m in the 2nd party, because of slow rising levels, but at least she can use a bow instead of a sling.

I like the fighter/thief combo because they level up fairly quickly and the two classes work off of the same stats...Str, Dex, and Con. You don't have to worry about beefing up a 4th stat. And they get the benefits of the fighter's exceptional stats.

I'm kinda getting tired of running two parties parallel so I'll probably wind up combining the best of both thru export/import. That party will probably be as follows:

    2 Fighters, 1 Fighter/Thief, 2 Mages, and 1 Cleric.

Contrary to some opinions, I do think it's worthwhile having a thief type in the party mix. There are a lot of traps in some areas, and I think that the Cleric is better used by loading him/her up with heals instead of find trap spells, unless you want to carry around a ton of Find Trap Scrolls. You do find a Wand of Trap Finding, but I sold it off after a point to helf afford buying some of those spiffy weapons available at Konlan's weapon shop.

That's my two cents, such as it is.

[IMG] You need to balance power with healing.

    Cleric
    Druid
    Fighter
    Ranger
    Thief (very important!!!)
    Mage

That was my first party. I often wished I had a bard because of all the cool items they have.

    thanks for the help.
I have decided to go with
1= paladin (undead turning, healing + tank)
    2= fighter (probably Dwarf tank)
    3= cleric (healing)
    4= mage (for the fireworks)
5= bard (if there is good stuff why not use it)
6= thief (why take damage from traps)

    thanks for the suggestions

    [IMG] Fighter
    Fighter
    Fighter/Thief (Bowman)
    Thief
    Illusionist
    Cleric

The 2 pure fighters to take the damage, the cleric to heal, the thief for, that's obvious and the illusionist to cast spells while being shielded by the fighters, the bowman hits them at long range, I made him a fighter/tihef so I could put his proficiencies in find traps and stealth, while my HALFLING THIEF (you gettin this Ragusa? ;) ) put her proficiencis in open locks and pick pockets. It works for me ;)

    Paladin
    Ranger
    Bard
    Fighter/thief
    Druid
    Transmuter

The paladin is the only one good for conversations as he has to be of high charisma.
A ranger is a good fighter with extra skills.
Bards get high lore plus they are good supporting mages. Mine always wears armor though so he can engage in combat as well.
My fighter/thief also wears splint-mail but he can still detect traps. Then I switch to studded-leather armor so he can disarm them too.
Druids are just fun to play.
Finally, I wanted a specialist mage for the extra spell but a trasmuter has disadvantages. Got my bard though...

WOW! The parties all other users suggested are really different from mine....I like mulitclassed characters so my party is:

    Fighter
    Fighter/Thief
    Fighter/Illusionist (Crossbow)
    Fighter/Cleric (2)
    Mage/Thief (Bow)

Perhaps this party is lacking a bit of magician power...nevertheless it worked in my game.

[IMG] My very first party was:

    Fighter (2H sword)
    Fighter (battle axe/2H axe)
    Fighter (usual longsword/shield)
    Fighter/Thief
    Fighter/Mage
    Fighter/Cleric

Everyone had bows with the exception of the F/C who couldn't use a bow, so he got to use a sling instead.

This party worked ok, but I disliked the level up delays with the F/M and the F/C. The F/T goes up fairly quick, so I still like using him. I like the concept of the F/M but I really do not like all of the extra time needed for the character to level up. The F/C...to be honest, I think this is worthless, just use a straight bona fide cleric. So I dumped the F/M and the F/C and imported a mage and a cleric from another game. Now the party really kicks ass.
