[IMG] A year ago I bought Planescape in a Jewell case. I heard some great things about the game, but due to the fact Jewell case packed games come with no Game Manual I am lost to say the least. I like the atmosphere and obvious intrigue, but the setting and NPCs are very different from what I am used to.

Understand that I didn't give up on it after only a couple of hours. I tried it for at least 10 (more like 15), but not really understanding the flow or interaction, plus the obvious difference from standard D&D RPGs, I became lost and frustrated, not really sure if I was doing such and such right, or totally missing important nuances of the game and its setting. I played D&D for a number of years in the paper and pencil version before taking on the computer version. So though I had to learn the computer interface, I didn't have to learn the basic game philosophy of a computer D&D game. But Planescape is different (or maybe I am dense)and so if you have any place that I can go to to read on this game to at least familirize myself with the gameplay, it would be much appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

Ok first up welcome to the boards

Now to the game. Yes it is different, very different from the other (A)D&D CRPGs. It is more focussed on role playing, rather than hack and slashing. It is often under-rated and many people dislike it because of the mortuary beginning, but seeing as you have played for 10-15 hours i'm assuming you are past this point.

The really important thing in Ps:t (Planescape: Torment) is to TALK to people. TALK TALK TALK! TALK to everyone, ok the hive dweller's tend to say the same thing, but there are plenty of named characters - TALK to them, TALKING is very very very important. Ok maybe i'm going overboard but it's essential that you grasp that it's TALKING that's important.

Now here are some links that should aid your progress and enjoyment of the (amazingly great) game -

    http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/Torment/tormenthints.php

The second one seems to be more along the lines of what you need (though don't read the sorcerer's bits, yet, because it contains some small spoilers)

If there is something more specific that you are stuck with then just ask.

[edit] If you are wondering about the class system then you can be a Fighter (which you start as), a Mage (see mebbeth in ragpickers square), and a thief (several people can train you, but i don't bother with this class enough to be able to name them). You can switch between them at will (if you have dakkon (smoldering corpse bar - bottom right hive section) and/or annah (later on) in your party ; as well as non joinable characters. You can't play as a priest, though you can get one to join you (later on).

You only gain experience in your current class, and you only gain characteristic point(s) when you gain a level in your highest class, i.e. if you are a fighter 5, thief 3, mage 2, and you get a level in fighter you would gain a characteristic (sp?) point, but a level in thief or mage would not give you a characteristic point.

[IMG] Here's another tip. Though the printed manual is very short and rather crappy, you can find it whole on one of the Torment CDs, in pdf format. I think it's on the first CD.

[IMG] Thanks, Taluntain, I never even thought of the manual on the first disk via pdf format.

And Lazy Bonzo, thanks for the information and the welcome.

    A sort of advice:

    1) Don't bother with fighting much. Use as much healing charms as you like, and don't train on thugs. As soon as you get magic weapons, save and try killing an abishai a few times. It's hard, but with some luck you'll get the first 7000 XP, which will open the way to anothers... They respawn after reentering area (They are in Hive).

    2) Follow the story and try even the most bizzare options.

Just to follow up on some of the other posts: As a general rule, if you are able to use diplomacy of some sort, you get more experience than flat out fighting through a situation (don't worry, there's still plenty of fighting). Don't overlook the wisdom and intelligence stats to be a big time muscle man (remember, you're immortal). Have fun role-playing. You can explore all kinds of neat dialogue paths and really enhance your experience. This is, by far, my favorite CRPG.
