It could be considered cheese with Firkraag or Adalon, I agree. Doesn't stop me from doing it if I feel like it, though. I've noticed that several enemies appear immune to normal traps, though, not sure which dragons that included.

For Abazigal (and Draconis), it's less effective, you'd trap only their human forms, which are typically not the most dangerous. But you can put your traps out of their fields of view and lure them over. Also, they get infinite free heals, so they deserve to get cheesed.

 

You can get Greater Malison in BG1, IIRC. You can pickpocket a scroll off the mage hanging out in Ulgoth's Beard (name??), and you can buy one off the innkeeper there. I can't recall if there are other places to get them though.

 

Nice, i never knew you could pickpocket Shandalar for a scroll. i wonder if ou can pickpocket him for another one if you meet him again in the city of Baldur's gate ?
If you're there you can also pickpocket Dushai, the gnome seer woman - she carries a ring of free action.

 

I've never met him in BG proper - how does that come about? I always kill him for the huge XP benefit, albeit with cheese that meets/exceeds his own.

Not only do I pickpocket Dushai and the GM scroll from Shandalar (thanks for the name reminder BTW), but I keep pickpocketing him for a number of scrolls and (I think?) a potion or two. If he busts you and turns hostile, then things get interesting.

 

If he goes hostile, does the entire town not care, or do they turn hostile too ? You'd want to be careful on using your AoE spells on the guy either way, unless you don't care about commoners getting in the way.
Also in ulgoth's beard you can also pickpocket the dward in the inn for the hammer +1 : Kneecapper (+4 vs large humanoids.) Pretty handy as you can only otherwise get the hammer as a reward for clearing durlag's tower - and by that point you shouldn't be caring much about ogres any longer.

 

Is SoD worth buying? Does it blend well with the original storylines, as it's purported to do? I've read some harsh reviews about it, but that could be from "purists", who get a little carried away. I played tons of games as a kid, on my C64, but then dropped all of that for sports, partying, women, and college (among other things). I'm a born-again gamer, thus I have no allegiance or notions of how these games are "meant to be".

Oh yeah, I forgot about the dwarf. Yep, I steal his stuff too. I have also killed him for some nice armor, and a potion or gem as well. Maybe both? I only do it after I have completed all the UB quests/fights.

I think the townsfolk who are nearby only go hostile if/when you attack him. Pickpocketing by itself won't do it, as I recall.

The only things that can damage him are magic missiles, and that only can bring him down if he's been paralyzed. Many attempts at each of these are usually required. He's tough. I think I've also had my fighter/thief stand behind him and give a few backstabs to supplement the magic missile assault my other pals unleash on him.

 

Some of the criticism was certainly overblown, not helped by people jumping on the bandwagon - some of whom had never even played the game.
Most of the criticism was about some of the dialogue and how they changed the personality of some of the original companions, game-play wise not a lot is wrong with the game.

Sure, the writing can be a bit ham-fisted at times, both dialogue and pace wise the expansion does not seem to flow as well as the original games. But you're bound to at least get several hours of solid entertainment out of it, and I thought it was nice to go on a 'new' adventure with the old gang again.

I'd say it's worth at least one playthrough, if you can pick it up in a sale there's really not a lot of reason not to pick it up.
