In the intro to Candlekeep you're asked to clear out the room from rats from the dwarf guy in the southeast area. You walk in and there are 2 cats just watching them roam around! Does anyone else take pleasure in taking them out as well?

Murder? That´s rightful punishment for the cat´s betrayal to let the rats roam around without lifting a paw. They would even stand by and watch idly while the rats swarm and slaughter some weaker PC.

The rats could be bigger than the cats. I've seen rats in RL so big that they'd probably murder any cat who got too close.

And they realize that a PC is entering the room with XP withdrawal symptoms. Most are armed to the teeth, smelling awful, or melting the tiles behind them due to sheer hotness.

So, why should you as a cat lord, befoul your paws? especially when there are human servants around.

I've not seen any that big myself, but do remember reading a news article with photos from somewhere in south-america, where they'd been having a problem with rats as big as a small dog.
Imagine something like that creeping up through your toilet while you're doing a #2..

One of our cats once brought home a rat. Apparently, their skin is too tough for cats to really chew through (biting through to break their necks is much easier, apparently), so they can't really eat them. On a farm, you'd typically have cats to catch mice, and dogs to catch rats, as dogs have stronger jaws.

So, you can't really blame those cats in Candleskeep.

Depends on the cat and the rat, really. But yeah, killing and eating something are two different things. And besides, domestic cats generally don't eat what they catch. They'll bring it home to show you their trophy and sometimes tear it apart inside your apartment because fuck you, but most won't eat their prey, except an occasional bug.

My old half demented geezer ate mice in his Haydays. took one into the house and watched him chomp it down.

Our cats have brought home many different kinds of mice, blackbirds, pigeons, hares (not full grown), bunnies, moles and rats. The only catches they didn't eat were a certain type of mice (called shrews in english, apparently), because they don't seem to taste nice, moles because they have a very tough skin (they might eat the head, though), and rats I thought also because of their tougher skin.

It may depend on the cat and the rat, though I've definitely never seen any cat that actually ate shrews. Only kittens catch them, before they learn that they don't like them that much.

Hares, bunnies and pigeons are a bit too big to eat completely, or maybe our cats just weren't hungry enough, but generally they catch mostly mice and they get mostly eaten. In fact, in summer they don't really eat what we feed them, they prefer to just eat mice instead.

So basically what you're saying is... your cats ate certain types of mice and the occasional blackbird? :p

My cats never ate anything even back on the farm (at least nothing they brought home). They butchered stuff. That's about it.

My cat is fat enough that you'd think it was killing and eating every small rodent and bird around, but she's super chill around them - she'll start chattering a bit when i'm feeding the birds outside, but i've never actually seen her go at them.

They ate all mice, except for that one type. And, rarely, something bigger. They would sometimes bring mice back home and then one of the other cats would eat it. But if they bring stuff home, you can be sure that they already ate enough when out and about.

Typically, our cats tend to lose weight in summer. Eating healthier, too, one assumes. Though with all the pesticides, maybe not that healthy, either.
