I laughed when I read this because I only played D&D after having played Neverwinter Nights 2. Of course, it wasn't solely because of that particular game. I enjoy building things, and since NWN2 gave the ability to make a module, or even a persistent world, and that grabbed my interest more than the original campaign (which I still haven't finished). I ended up building a persistent world with the help of a couple other people and we were trying to make it as close to PnP as possible within the game game engine. I was no expert on D&D, but I did spend quite a bit of time researching lore, perusing maps of Faerun, learning rules, checking some source books, and all that stuff to make the PW as close as it could be. Also, I enjoyed running more table-top style adventures for groups of players, so I needed to learn all that. We had a good group that enjoyed that stuff rather than hack and slash. Anyway, one of the other founders was (and is) big into D&D so eventually I participated in a couple of his campaigns until conflict of schedule stopped it.

So there you have it. One person led to D&D through NWN2.

You're clearly the exception that proves the rule. :p

You are probably correct for the most part. I think modern games have a tendency to hide the rules and you only see the result. It doesn't provide much of a learning step unless you're willing to dig into it. Yes, there are the people who analyze everything so they can make the best character, but probably a lot of them already know something about D&D. I am aware of some other people who played on my server that did their first D&D campaigns with us (the other founder and I), so I know I'm not the only exception. There are two or three!

I have, to this day, never met anyone in real life that participated in tabletop D&D. I only know about it through videogames.

Speaking of tabletop DnD, I was lucky enough to stumble upon a Planescape AND Darksun box set. I've been wanting to run Planescape games for a long time.

Which reminds me of another issue I have with this and nearly every DnD video game. They're all on Faerun but especially the effing Sword Coast. I am bloody tired of the Sword Coast! Really now, there are far more interesting places that would translate well into a video game. I'm thinking Ravenloft or Dark Sun. Who wouldn't want to play as a wereraven or half-giant?

Sword Coast is as generic as it gets. People like generic fantasy.

It takes an incredible work of fiction (like Torment) to appeal to them otherwise.

That's unfortunate. I'm inclined to say you need to find some better company. :p

Yeah, me too. I've considered running a campaign in Planescape on several occasions, but I always get discouraged by the amount work it takes to run a planar adventure.

Obviously, you could limit it to Sigil, but there's so much potential to explore other planes.

Same thing goes for Spelljammer too. Although I've incorporated elements from Spelljammer into my campaigns on multiple occasions. In fact, I'm running a small SJ plothook this week.

There actually was a Dark Sun computer game though I do not believe it sold very well.

They releases enough supporting accessories to run a good Planescape campaign IMO. The whole idea of that type of campaign is Vast.

There was an entertaining Dark Sun series made for the computer, yes, but it is ancient, even moreso than Baldurs Gate. I'm not sure how well it sold but it did have good reviews and was a quality title for it's time.

They even made a Ravenloft game for the PS1 as well. A fighting game with virtually no story to speak of. I...prefer to pretend that one doesn't exist.

Yeah, Planescape is huge and there is a place for every worldview, which is why campaigns are so much fun there.

Amazon is saying this game isn't out until December 31, 2015.

I'm confused that there are only 5 races and 6 classes. I suppose they are throwing their money against other things (?) but not sure why the developers wouldn't try to bring in the options that are available in the base game. This is one of the most commonly stated reasons for why people love(d) IWD2--the plethora of options available during creation of characters.

Same for me, though i've played all the IE games and some others that find their origins in tabletop campaigns, i've never played any tabletop myself, nor do i know anyone who does :p

I've only recently learned about sword cast : legends through a video recommendation on YouTube, but from what i saw of it it looks to be at least an entertaining game - and i really like the idea of their dungeon crawl mode - i havn't played any crpg's with a similar system before, so i'd like to try my hand at DMíng :p

They're doing a couple of rounds of test runs for those people who pre-ordered the game, actual release date is on October 20th.

I still think in 3,5 rules. Always made an wizard/fighter up to xx/6. No multiclass, no arcane spell failure?? No idea what the true 5.0 rules are.

IMO you can calmly skip it without worrying that you missed out on anything. On a scale from 1 to Planescape: Torment, it's a solid "meh".

To be honest, i thought it was okay. nothing on the level of the infinity engine games, for sure - but it had it's moments.
Worth at least a single playthrough in my book. Also, though i havn't tried it myself, the DM mode might be interesting to some.

There are far too many good games out there to waste your time on a generic wannabe RPG in one of the most generic settings ever created.
