If people are offended by the bad language that is their choice but I find it silly. We hear it, read it and even use it sometimes ourselves. Toughs whether in real life or in a game are toughs. This is a role playing game. A goody goody might role play speaking very nicely but a rough character would use bad language. I don't believe in wrapping everything in honey and sweet smelling spices. I have added mods to games to make them more gory because they were so ridiculous.

I believe in the right to choose what you want but it should be optional. Those insects in the game have me swearing up a storm. :D

This is an awesome game. I am grateful to OE for developing it.

Part of the problem is that those types don't do it enough. If they're going to have the hard edge, swear every other word, swear when it doesn't apply, can't form a sentence without swearing, guy, have that guy. If you're not then it can go. For example, in one of Sagani's banters she says 'moosef'er', the one and only time I encountered swearing in her dialogue (that I remember) and thought it felt out of place. I played through, beat, and enjoyed the game but, I felt like the language was cheesy and stupid more than it added any sort of flavor or realism.

We each have our own likes and dislikes. Backers have requested things which were added to the game. We asked for a player house and got the Stronghold. Players requested a brothel ad one was added to Defiance Bay. I think it fits well there.

This is a niche game and I am very pleased that younger people are playing it and enjoying it.

Nakia, it's entirely possible to have a rough characters use rough language without actually using blatant obscenities. There's a wide enough spectrum in language that you don't have to go from "(bleep)* that" straight to "Gosh darn it". I can think of a couple offhand. "Damn it". Or "Gods damn it". There are slightly less obscene ways to do this. And a little fictional inventiveness doesn't hurt either.

    * the site filters removed a word that rhymes with puck. ;) You get the idea.

    ---------- Added 0 hours, 10 minutes and 57 seconds later... ----------

I'm not a total prude when it comes to obscenities. Personally, I'd prefer they weren't in the game, and that more ... inventive, less objectionable words and phrases were used.

Regardless, the one scene where I thought that there was an excess of obscenities was the Ducal palace hearings. I found the obscenities a bit annoying on a couple of levels. I didn't think that they were necessary. And frankly, they felt completely out of place for that scene. High level political representatives in closed hearings such as that are NOT going to be that profane in front of their city's political ruler. It just doesn't happen. And a representative that can't keep a reasonably civil tongue in his mouth would be kicked out of the hearing, and possibly arrested. And his group would probably be looking for another rep.

Now, if a group, such as the Dozens want to talk in that rough a manner in private back in their HQ, it would make more sense. But not in this setting. It was totally out of place IMO.

"Those motherfraking pieces of skaelgar dren!"

I don't particularly like it when authors get "creative" with swearwords...

I find that there is legitimate utility in getting that extra point of mechanics early. It means that there are a lot less places I need to come back to in order to get into a chest. The fact that they dish out great damage to boot, makes a rogue a worthy addition to the party in my opinion. It's not like promoting a party of 6 rogues, for god's sake.

I don't particularly like it when they use them in the first place. Besides, "inventive" doesn't have to mean silly sounding.

"Those gods-be-damned pieces of filth" works for me, for example.

"Dam it, god damn it and hell" are offensive to some people and in my opinion are no more acceptable than certain coarse words. In fact they are bleasphemy. If one is unacceptable then so is the other.

I have no religious affiliation myself and probably because of my upbringing and background I simply do not see the difference.

I would not want a game to use coarse language constantly but an occasional use I can ignore.

Someone who is going to be offended by those things are going to be offended by the very existence of polytheism in the game, and would find the game generally offensive from the very start. And thus, I'm not worried about such people. They would be offended by the presence of magic. They'd be offended if the entire plot didn't revolve around Jesus. They'd be offended by just about anything and everything in this or any DnD game.

Besides, I didn't say "God damn it". I wrote, "Gods damn it"! Plural! ;)

    Actually, that's not true.

If a game were to set itself in the real world, they'd likely make so many errors in their perception of how things are that it's less offensive to use a make believe system complete with make believe deities.

Today I just ordered my new computer (in parts) so it should be arriving in about a week. While I think I could run PoE on my current system, the game performance would suffer horribly and I'd probably encounter some crippling bugs so I've been holding off. Soon I'll be able to see for myself what the hype (and the criticisms) are all about.

There's some optimization/fixing to be had at the moment, the game started chugging a bit when there were a lot of NPCs on the screen and I was running it on a 4670K and GTX 980.

Is your game fully patched? The fully patched game comes with the option to lower graphics settings, significantly improving performance in slower PCs.
