It works. Too bad Obsidian wasn't willing to indulge in the historical mini-essays we saw attached to IE item descriptions.

I like it Tal. I also like that the final result is the culmination of multiple ideas from multiple individuals... voted on by the community. Really feels like a community item from that perspective.

Sounds good. A couple of things:

    1. Do we know that damage will be in the xDy dice roll format? I thought that was more from D&D rules, but I don't believe PoE follows that ruleset.

    2. The last sentence of the history:
This implies that whoever has the staff is in some kind of mortal danger. I know there's the 5% chance of 1d6 piercing damage, but that's relatively minor compared to the ominous sound of that sentence. It almost suggests that there should be some sort of side quest associated with the staff (after you get it), but obviously there won't be.

    1. We don't know yet, but I suspect the system will be at least similar (pretty much everything else about PoE sounds very familiar). We'll see what Obsidian has to say.

    2. I didn't read it as though the "grisly end" was particularly immediate, but still, it's just a rumour... who knows what the real story is. :D

The sad and grisly truth is that the wielder actually has a 1% per use chance of being teleported to Splunge's house in the middle of a nasty February day, being strapped down to a chair, and being forced to listen to Splunge speak accountant at him.

As they say, the proverbial fate worse than death . . .

As far as damage output goes, it's still powerful if we're thinking max early teen levels in D&D terms. Triple damage types, bludgeoning plus 4-16 extra in total is in the ball park of Flail of the Ages +5 from ToB!

Oh well, I suppose Obsidian could throw in a blanket percentual nerf if they deem it necessary.

Ooh, or better yet: Make it like Lilicor, but have the staff quote various accounting concepts and principles. “Debits on the left, credits on the right”, “Fixed assets should be depreciated over their estimated useful life”, “2+2 equals whatever you want it to be”, etc. I could provide the voice file for added authenticity. Those “deemed unworthy” would be non-accountants, and the grizzly end would be as dmc describes.

    Now we’re getting somewhere! :thumb:

One thing I noticed that Obsidian will surely need to adjust somehow is the spells per day attributes:

PoE doesn't use the spells per day system that DnD uses. It may have changed, but when I was following this much more closely I believe spell power was largely on a per encounter basis. So you can cast so much per encounter, and then you'd essentially be at full for the next. At any rate, I'm sure Obsidian will have some thoughts on how to adjust for that.

Sorry for not jumping into the discussion earlier but you guys seemed to have had it well in hand but now it might be too late. Wasn't the entire idea a staff that boosted spellcasting? A mage doesn't use a staff to hit with, a staff with on-hit abilities is pointless. Anyhow, I think I am too late in the discussion but cut the extra damage on melee and focus on the extra spells or even that the on hit stuff is on spells cast. I really need more time and energy so I can involve myself more in things I care about. :s

OK, I finally got some feedback from Obsidian regarding the memorial and our item:

So we'll need a short and appropriate blurb about SP and our departed members to be immortalized on the memorial. We've got 200 characters available for the memorial engraving, so get creative. ;)

As for the item - as we suspected.

    Also:

    Ah, yes.

I don't know about you but there's no way I can keep my mages completely out of melee at all times, so to me them having a decent defensive/offensive weapon does get in handy and this concept makes it something I'd want to have equipped combined with the other bonuses. But if you've got any specific ideas on what properties you'd like it to have, do post them.

I don't think so. Some of us don't typically play mages as our character, so wanted something that could be advantageous to any character class (hopefully equally).

But since this is a party-oriented game, I wouldn't care too much if it ended up that way (i.e. a mage's weapon)... It'd just be a shame to have to give our item to an NPC :)

Also, in line with Tal's comments, I would think it would be difficult in any modern CRPG to keep your mage completely out of the fray. Given that, wouldn't the knockback effect be the best possible thing? "Oh, you want a piece of me you green-skinned filth? Try it from 40 feet over there! Booyah!"

    YMMV. :)

You have to remember that this item is the culmination of input from a lot of individuals. If you read through some of that you'll see that the knockback effect and keeping the item usable for multiple classes has been a bit of theme, actually.

In my original concept of the item I had suggested a long range knockback ability, like how Saruman and Gandalf were knocking the crap out of each other from halfway across the room in the Fellowship of the Ring movie, in the Orthanc battle.

But yeah, even short range knockback is useful for any wizard, even the most melee averse, I would think. Nasty enemy gets too close (come on, it happens to every wizard). Knock them backward, and then run behind the nearest friendly tank type.

And furthermore, I think we are largely thinking about this item with our DnD hats on rather than our PoE hats. In PoE, as I understand it, Wizards are not relegated to being backline, frail party members. They can stride forward in full plate if they so desire, and be highly melee oriented. I would think this item, as it currently stands at least, would be highly desirable for either variety of wizard.

Word says that's 202 characters including spaces...

A little awkward I think, but 200 characters is not much to work with :)

Here BTA - keeping your theme:

An ode to the fallen of Sorcerer's Place
Sir Bel a Paladin with sword and mace
Takara 'twas turnips put a smile on his face
Kitrax for tech help was first on the case
Each now gone but not without a trace

I think that is exactly 200 with spaces (but if they need to be strung together you are looking at another 4 or 5 characters).

When I pasted in the item history I had to take out all the line breaks to fit within the character limit, even though my word processor said I was a couple of characters under the limit when I used them there, so yea, those count too, but I'm sure I can get Obsidian to make an exception for those few characters and manually enter BTA's original version. :thumb:
