[IMG] After much deliberation I've distilled all the item suggestions down to 6 that I believe have the most potential (or I just liked the most :D). A big thank-you to everyone's who's contributed so many good ideas - I really had a hard time narrowing the selection down and even these six will be hard to choose from, I'm sure.

Some of the ideas were similar and where appropriate, I've merged them under a single entry to keep the list from getting too long. I've also made a few minor alterations where I felt it was needed to keep the items distinct enough so that they wouldn't appear too similar.

Before you vote in the poll you'll need to read through the entries listed below as the descriptions and/or commentary are too long to fit in the poll. Some of the ideas are also in more conceptual stages than others, but don't let that bother you. Vote for the idea that you believe has the most potential and if you have suggestions on how to improve it, DO POST THEM!

(For those of you who didn't participate during the game's Kickstarter campaign, a quick recap: as a thank-you from Obsidian for supporting them, our community gets to help design an EPIC, HIGH LEVEL WEAPON, ARMOR or ARTIFACT that will be included in the game. This personalized item will be used by thousands of players and will be one of the best in the game. We can provide the lore, look, and type of the item, and Obsidian will put it in the shipped game. This poll is to determine which of a number of item suggestions you like the most.)

    Now, the items:

    1) Subtly Awesome Ring/Amulet/Belt (BTA)

    Item and related commentary:

    2) Amulet of Random Babbling (Harbourboy)

    Item and related commentary:

[Harbourboy's original idea was to make this item useless, but I'd make it more interesting in a quirky sort of way instead. The amulet would make the wearer immune to all magical attempts at silencing and grant other beneficial effects (e.g. immunity to charm and mind control), but the downside would be that the wearer could not keep silent for prolonged periods of time and would be magically compelled to randomly babble even at the most inopportune of times, potentially alerting enemies to the wearer's presence while hidden. It'd be cute to have an overhead or interface display of various random sentences from past RBTs appearing every so often as if being uttered by the amulet's wearer. -Tal]

    3) Sorcerer's Hiding Place (hannibal555)

    Item and related commentary:

    4) Board of Magick (reepnorp)

    Item and related commentary:

    5) Marble Chessboard (MoN)

    Item and related commentary:

    6) Staff of Taluntain (Marceror/joacqin)

    Item and related commentary:

    joacqin's comments:

    Blades of Vanatar's comments:

    Potential issues:

    • We don't know if knockback will be implemented in PE.

There are some really awesome Ideas for Items.

But I chose the SoT. Because it fits SP well. He is after all Sorcerer's Place.
And what better item to represent this place than one that insta-kills Trolls ( and Spammers ) :)

My vote goes to the Board of Magick. I like the idea of having previous owners names carved into the board as well.

I think this is the best way in which we can both have a reference to Kitrax and Sir Bel and still have the item be about all of BoM :).

Although I find all the ideas to be very interesting I am going to vote for my own which may not be very surprising.

I cast my vote on option 6!

In fairness to Tal, he actually did try to dissuade me from using his name when I first came up with it. Though he doesn't seem to be fighting too hard against it anymore! :p

I happen to think the name very fitting.

the random babbling amulet is so genious and will be part of any group, or be the trinket everyone carries around always!
It does seem Tals staff wins though. Would be cool if they added some of the BoM members mentioned in the lore of the staf as NPCs :)

Hey, I put the staff at the bottom of the list... can't do much more to dissuade people from voting for it. :p Though if anyone's got a suggestion for a better name, I'm all for it.

I thought the Random Babbling Amulet would get far more votes, really...

I voted for staff of Tal, I loved the idea of the amulet of random babbling, I pictured it like liarcor spouting crap like "my brother was a +12 hackmaster" but I didn't care for the applications presented here, I like the idea of a staff that causes physical hits to a distant opponent.

I voted for option #6 but I almost chose the babbling one instead. It was close, but in the end, I figure the latter one would be more usable. One thing about the babbler is it could babble the names of users here. Hah!

The staff could babble quotes and grant immunities from time to time ^^
Anyway, good job working it all out Tal with such short notice. Six cool ideas which would all honor Sorcerer's Place

I'm all in for the staff of T.

Sure, Staff of the Magi created waves of awe for BG2 newbies and veterans alike, but mainly because it had such a huge list of bonuses. Yet, it was just a stat stick, even for casters. Likewise, I'm sure many missed the potential of Staff of the Ram in the hands of a backstabber - "hey, it's just a stick, it's gotta suck, right?".

So.. how about something decisively awesome for casters, that also has a selectable, built-in Tenser's Transformation equivalent power so that it makes for a "different, but powerful" weapon in the hands of a warrior?

Voted for the hiding place, I just like pocket dimensions and things, could even jazz it up by having a random demon/creature follow you out of the pocket plane, with the monster having a random disposition (friendly/neutral/hostile/runs away screaming).

Apparently as part of our reward tier we also get a name and message on an in-game memorial. Since the staff is the most likely poll winner, I'm going to paste all the relevant info from the survey and what I've got entered so far:

    Gold Credits *
Your tier selection allows you to have your name added to the special Gold Credits section! Please enter how you would like your name to appear.

    - Sorcerer's Place Community - www.sorcerers.net

    In-game Memorial Name *
Your tier allows you to have your name and a short message engraved on an in-game memorial. Please enter how you'd like your name to appear.

    - /

    In-game Memorial Description *
Please enter the message you'd like to have engraved and readable by other players.

    - /

    Item Name
What would you like the name of the item to be? Please avoid long names if possible!

    - Staff of Taluntain

    Item Type
Please choose what type of item you are creating. Remember to be creative! A longsword may get lost in the shuffle, while a pair of unique gloves or a flail may stand out.
    Select item type.

    - Weapon/Shield

    Weapon/Shield Type
    Select weapon type.

    - Two-handed quarterstaff

    Item Color
    Select color.

    - Dark Red

    Item Concept
Describe the basic concept for the item.

    Example:

Extra damage against undead and can cast some sort of light or fire-based spell twice between resting.

    - Kills trolls in one blow (do we have trolls?)

    - A mage weapon that allows wizards to stand back and hit with a force effect from afar (think Gandalf and Saruman's battle in Orthanc). Possible?

    - In the hands of a non-mage perhaps the weapon requires close quarters fighting, but has a knockback effect (do we have knockback?)

    - Grants one extra spell of every level.

    - Grants immunity to charm and mind control.

    Item Appearance *
Describe the appearance of the item. Please keep in mind that details won't always be visible in game, but may go into the description for the item.

    Example:

Brass-plated plate armor with a black bear prominently enameled on the breastplate. It's dented and scratched in many places and generally looks well worn. Notably, there's a large puncture that has been repaired right over the heart. The pauldrons are flared a little more than standard plate armor.

    - /

    Item History *
Describe the history of the item.

    Example:

The ring was crafted by an orlan priest. He infused the ring with the captured soul fragments of his enemies and gave it to his prince as a gift. The prince died in battle fighting against a large force of Aedyran mercenaries in the Dyrwood. For a while, it went back to the Aedyr Empire where it was on display in a public exhibit as a morbid cultural curiosity from Eir Glanfath. Eventually, a burglar stole the ring and wound up taking it back to the Dyrwood.

    - /

I'm welcoming suggestions for the areas still blank and comments on what's filled out already! I'm still waiting for Obsidian's clarification on how much of what we've come up with for the staff is actually implementable and what this memorial will be like exactly.

    Taluntain's Staff: The Abominable Blackthorne

Ages ago there was a dark tower that housed a Wizard academy, Valaxarn Solanas, which in the Common Tongue translates to "Sorcerer's Place." The tower itself resembled a large rough-hewn pillar of black granite, with six jagged spiers protruding from the top of the tower.

The Valaxarn Solanas was renowned for its vast arcane knowledge, and the power of its disciples and students. It did, however, have an unfortunate location. Just to the west of the tower were the Troll-infested Death Moors. Also nearby were several other rival Wizard academies, whose students would often attack members of the Valaxarn Solanas on sight. The rewards were great for those who rose up in the ranks, that is ... if they didn't die first in a duel with a rival academy or end up ambushed by the Trolls that would sometimes venture from the Moors in great numbers.

The High Master of the Academy was an Elven Wizard named Taluntain. His skin tone was pale such that some of the students would snicker behind his back that perhaps he was undead. In stark contrast were his long hair and his robes, which were always jet black.

Taluntain became increasingly concerned about the increasing number of attacks from both the Trolls and the rival academies. One of the measures he took was to craft a powerful weapon with which he could act as a personal protector of his disciples or students if the need ever arose.

When the time came, he promptly ejected everyone from the laboratory of the Academy, the Sorcerous Sundries. For four weeks he had holed himself up in the Sundries, never coming out and never allowing anyone access to the Sundries.

When he emerged, his staff was complete. The staff itself had the appearance a six foot long pole of obsidian, with both the sheen and the facets to resemble the glassy material. However, the staff itself never chipped, broke, or shattered. Wickedly sharp spikes would protrude from various places on the staff, which could be as much a danger to its wielder as to its target. A large scarlet and orange opal rested at the top of the staff, which glowed with an intense red light from within. The light from the opal would play on the facets of the ebony material that comprised the rest of the staff, giving the weapon a distinctly sinister look.

The staff itself was capable of channeling the raw power of elemental fire, incinerating its victims with flames that could not be quenched. In the hands of its wielder, it could also project telekinetic force to knock down its targets.

Although Taluntain wanted the best for his students and wanted them to realize their potential, he imposed a discipline on the academy that many saw as harsh and unforgiving. And indeed, many of the students thrived in the rigorous environment. Others, not so much. His unusual appearance and intimidating demeanor was often to convince unruly students to fall in line. The odd student who ignored the warnings would discover what the staff was truly capable of. It was thus with a certain irony that he used the staff more often on his own academy members than its original targets.

As the centuries went by, the seemingly immortal Taluntain isolated himself more and more from the rest of the academy. He would confine himself for years at a time inside the topmost level of the main tower that he shared with his most trusted advisors, the High Hedge.

Then one night, many academy members and many people from the surrounding lands saw an immense blaze of fire at the top of the tower. As the fire gave way, everyone could see a colossal dragon with glowing scarlet scales fly up into the sky and away from the tower itself. Some would say that Taluntain had discovered the true path to power that made the spells of the Wizard seem petty by comparison. He had discovered the rituals that allowed him to undergo a transformation into a Red Dragon.

What has happened since then over the many centuries afterwards is a mystery. The tower itself is abandoned and most people now avoid it. It remains a foreboding sight even when viewed from a distance. Furthermore, the only possible approach to the tower itself is a long winding path of failing stonework and thorny brambles known as the Alley of Lingering Sighs. It is so named because the wind itself seems to carry a cacophony of cries and moans that many believe to be the voices of long-dead members of the academy, and yet no distinct words can be discerned from the wailing. The Alley of Lingering Sighs thus assures that almost no one ever makes it to the base of the tower.

The only three people known to have braved the way to the tower and come back alive were a trio of brave adventurers, Kitrax, Sir Belisarius, and Takara. They never described what horrors they saw while in the long abandoned tower. The only thing they brought back with them was the staff itself, which had been resting on the study in what had been Taluntain's private chamber in the High Hedge.

The staff itself has changed owners many times over the centuries. Rumors abound that anyone who has taken up ownership of the staff has met a grisly end, as though the staff itself resents being wielded by anyone that it deems unworthy.

    +2d6 bonus piercing damage
    +4d6 fire damage
    +2d6 damage to Trolls
    +2d6 damage to undead
Knockdown on contact with the target
    Project Force without limit
    Fireball 5 times a day
5% chance of +1d6 piercing damage against the wielder
Extra spell for each spell level per day
    Wizards only

I figure maybe this is a good starting point. I also tried to work in references to specific forums, as well as give homage to Kit and Sir B and Tak even though the poll decided on the Taluntain's Staff.
