That's two -- MoN, you (yourself and He -- I count multiple personalities as only one distinct person), Merlanni hasn't really gone one way or the other. I'm still good :D

OR maybe I'm ranting to myself ever thought of that ? :p

God I hate solicitors. Not only do they want over a grand of my money to print off some generic house purchase forms, they now apparently also expect me to take a day unpaid off work just so they can 'prove' I am who I say I am.

I actually had to laugh at that Tarrasque, because at first I thought you were using the "solicitor" term in its American meaning (i.e., people who are trying to sell you something), until halfway through the second sentence I realized it was a lawyer bash.

Yeah it's solicitor as in the British baby Lawyer as compared to Barristers :)

Yeah... I've never really understood the difference between a Lawyer and an Attorney and now you tell me there's two more terms ? Solicitor and Barristers ? Bloody hell

Not quite sure what the subtle difference is myself. To quote Wikipedia:

Solicitors advise clients, draft contracts for them and represent them in lower courts of law.

Barristers, also called counsels, are court specialists, who traditionally do not come into contact with their lay clients, but are instructed by solicitors. There is only about a 10% of barristers in most common law jurisdictions.

However in the UK solicitors are now allowed to represent clients in the higher courts as well. Always used to think that solicitors handled all the non court stuff like house purchases, contracts, wills etc, and barristers handled the court stuff ie criminal cases.

Sure there must be a lawyer on the boards that can explain better than this.

In related news, I now need to find a new solicitor as apparently telling a solicitor that you're not happy with the (lack of) service is grounds to both say they're not going to represent you, and to slag you off to the estate agent involved in your sale. To say I'm less than impressed is an understatement.

It's more of an specialism situation: Barristers appear in court ('before the bar') more, solicitors handle more of the 'out-of-court' stuff - contract writing & negotiating.

Most systems have it without out-and-out acknowledging it (how many contracts did the late Johnnie Cochran write up once he got to be a famous trial lawyer?); the U.K. system simply puts a self-explanatory label on the lid.

    Anywaysers, ONE HUNDRED - EIGHTEEN?!?

I go off to do other things for a few years and THIS is what I find when I get back? ;)

Seriously! Y'all can't be left on your own, obviously. [IMG]

Hoy - jaded empath, long time no, er, see I guess, although I'm not so much seeing you now either.

In the states, attorney and lawyer are interchangeable. There is no difference in what you call a guy who does contracts vs. going to court as to those terms.

A litigator is one who goes to court (me) and a transactional attorney does, y'know, transactions like contract writing.

My only evening off this week. Been made referee- commissioner for the new hockey club.

So, I am busy drilling, in a modern fun educational way, the rules into their heads.

Well you got half the syllable right it's Trip -- And well you're not the first one to make the connection between Tolkien elves and Trek's Vulcan. And to be technical it's a southern american accent, I wouldn't call it "bad" myself, I think it's rather charming honestly. Though not as charming as the Welsh accent. To be fair I've only heard it watching Torchwood, so what do I know really ?

And that's why I'd make a terrible horrible teacher. I'd staple fast food chain applications to failing student's papers or something similarly mean and condescending.

I just did a bad thing...
Y'know on House they had the long running joke about how it was NEVER Lupus?
Well, a few years ago we saw an old acquaintance of ours at the hospital when I was pregnant with Adam and she was there as her mother was very ill with cancer.
Anyway, she said "The doctors tested mum for Lupus the other day"
Then either me or Rob (I can't remember which now) replied with "Ah well, it's never Lupus"
Her face kind of froze as she said "Actually, it IS Lupus"

There was a few seconds of rather embarrassed silence before we attempted to explain and then made a speedy exit.

Anyway, Rob mentioned something about Lupus tonight and I remembered that conversation. I repeated the conversation to Rob to remind him of it but then, for some reason that I can not explain, I started to laugh! I literally went "Then it turned out it WAS Lupus and now she's dead!" and then just couldn't stop laughing. I feel so bad! I mean, the person in question wasn't here and we haven't seen her for quite some time, it was just me and Rob but I can't believe I just laughed about it! I'm a sh1t-b1tch! :(
