When I read about crap like this it makes Home-Schooling look like a viable option. What are these nuts thinking? There is no statement to be made when shooting kids.

I'm not sure else to say that hasn't been said before regarding stuff like this..... so sod it. I'll just say, a tragic loss of life and totally avoidable :(. RIP and my thoughts and wishes go out to the family and friends of the victims in this time. Awful.

The people with the guns don't point them at other human beings, and instead go catch a movie or something.

Listen. This situation is the result of a choice that someone made. That person could have just as easily chosen not to commit a senseless act of murder. From that perspective this sort of situation is, in fact, totally avoidable.

No one is trying to argue that there's some way to control the actions of all people on Earth to prevent anyone from making this same horrific choice, which I'm guessing is where you're coming from with your vague, two word responses.

Sorry Marceror but the mother was a gun lover who had at least 3 kinds of guns and, from a recent article, was responsible for teaching her children how to shoot. She's one of the dead, yeah, but imo she should be the main culprit here.

Unlike the previous shooting there simply is no indication that this was planned in advance at all... the tools were simply there.

A bit tacky, perchance, but if you add up the populations of the other countries then they're about equal to the USA and the numbers aren't remotely close.

What I'm wondering is, even with all the increased security in the schools in the US, weren't there any security guards around at all? Because from what I've read, nobody seemed to oppose him until the special forces or whatever arrived. Not that I think adding more security guards is a sensible solution to prevent tragic situations like these, but it's probably the only one that America in general is willing to consider. Slap an extra tax on every projectile weapon and box of ammunition and make it go to a fund that'll pay for say 1-3 extra security guards per every school in America. Still better than the alternative of doing nothing and waiting for the next massacre.

Alll I know is that I am glad the shooter killed himself so the parents won't be re-victimized by a gong show of a trial, where some idiot of a defense lawyer would argue the most offensive, stupid garbage imaginable.

The thing is, if Jonny Psycho has a gun, then the security guards need a gun. And then what's to stop one of them going postal? And, if I was a parent, I'm not sure I'd want my children going to a school where there are armed gunmen walking about the place. Guns need removing from the equation as much as possible. It really has gone past exasperating for this country now. At least it sounded like this one was the final straw for Obama, judging by that speech he did...

Security guards are usually a bit more mentally stable. I assume there are regular psychological tests and so on that they'd be subject to to make sure that they're fit for the job. They'd certainly be much more scrutinized in connection with the gun that they're wearing than your Average Joe. Not to mention that I haven't heard of any large scale massacres by security guards so far.

I know that we've had security guards in high schools going as far back as my own time there and I think they actually had guns even then. Given the amount of drug trade going on in/around most schools, that's not really surprising. I know that we've got security guards even in primary schools these days, but I don't know if they're carrying guns.

Obama can shed tears and cry a river but the reality of NRA is that as far as the guns in the US go, nothing will change unless they get behind the reform, which they never will, considering that to them a few massacres every now and then are considered acceptable losses for "freedom". Armed gunmen protecting the schools are far more in line with their philosophy since that's a win-win scenario for them. In the end, it sells & promotes even more guns and jobs for people carrying them.

Never mind that the obvious consequence of that would be such massacres moving to less guarded buildings. Common sense doesn't figure into their equations. For NRA, the "solution" to guns is always simply more guns.

I'm sure most all of us have tools in our homes that could easily be used to take another life, so access to such weapons isn't the only problem here. That said, the fact that the mother had a GD automatic assault rifle laying around the house would seem to indicate that the lunacy didn't start with her son. I mean, under what circumstances does it make sense to have such an item "gracing" the family home, and all of the weapons should have been secured in a safe that wasn't accessible to the kiddies.

It wasn't easy, but for anyone interested in how gun control went down in Australia, first 6 minutes of this:

And keep in mind John Howard was/is a conservative.
