I don`t think i ever finished Morrowind, to be honest. I just monkeyed around and did quests for just about everybody. Very good game, though. Better than Oblivion - deffinatly.

Too late, I suppose, since you already bought 3 and 4. However – I'll say that I really wanted to love Oblivion, but found the absurd leveling system too frustrating and never got a character past level 15 or so. I suspect that if I went back and played it – now that I'm used to Skyrim's far superior graphics and leveling system –*I'd find less interest in it. But that's me.

I used to own a copy of Morrowind but at the time I had it, didn't have a system that could run it worth a damn. So I gave it away - to Falstaff, in fact. Haven't played it since, but I'm told it was a better game than Oblivion in many respects.

In any event, have fun with them.

Well, I'll let you all know. I have a pretty high patience level for these games, having cut my teeth on the first Wizardry, the first Ultima, and the gold box games, so I will hopefully enjoy them. I downloaded the mod for Morrowind that updates graphics and sound (there's a version 3.0 out). It was a pretty painless install, I have to say.

I'll probably start Morrowind some time before the weekend.

So, how's Morrowind for you? This thread is making me feel nostalgic. Too bad my current computer can't handle it even with FPS Optimizer. :(

Well, I started it and then realized that it was going to be impossible to play while I was finishing up my latest Skyrim character, as the mechanics were too clunky in comparison. I'm fine with clunky mechanics as long as I don't have anything to compare them to. So, I tabled it until I finished my Skyrim character, but then I moved my office and that took up all my time, so I really haven't touched my home computer for a couple of weeks. I'm thinking when I get back to it I will jut go with Morrowind and ignore Skyrim, given the amount of time that has passed. Probably this weekend.

I agree, Morrowind's combat system is CLUNKY. But everything else is awesome. :D Alright, let us know if you like it!

Played a very little over the past three weeks, other things going on.

My biggest beef so far is that it's just slow. I think that has more to do with my current expectations of a game than what was going on when this was developed, so it is what it is and I will just deal with it.

It is slow but deep and lots of stuff to explore and you can really really powergame your character. :D

    Skyrim, down to Arena

I've played all the Elder Scrolls games, and I find Skyrim the worst in terms of continuity. Obviously this is my own opinion, and yours may well be different, but the 'improvements' made were so big in numbers it really felt like a unique game in the series. Oblivion was an improvement on Morrowind, and that was an improvement on Daggerfall (probably due to the enhancement in technology). Morrowind was by far the best to play, due to it's feel of actually being a stranger to the land and it's great sounds. Yes, the combat had some cons to it; for example I never understood the hit/miss part of attacking. But with a mod that makes every attack hit more often unless blocked properly, and on occasion, one that took out Cliff Racers, it was, and still is, the best I've played!

I welcome all replies that prove me wrong. :p

Probably because Morrowind has no fast travel. I think that's how it really should be. Slow. Just taking the scenery in and enjoying the view.

Well, that goodness there's fast travel in Skyrim. There are thieves' guild missions that require you to travel from Riften to Markarth, and back again. You could easily spend the entire evening just walking there if there was no means to fast travel. Now, I've never played Morrowind, so I don't know how "spread out" things were, but spending a couple of hours just walking your characted across the damn continent is not my idea of entertaining gaming.

My impression was that things were much more spread out in Morrowind than in Skyrim. There is no fast travel but there are mass transit systems and a bunch of different teleports.

I think that locations in Morrowind are more spread out, but Skyrim's world map is bigger. That's what makes fast travel important in Skyrim. Also, "walking across the continent" in Morrowind is an option for players like me who likes the outdoors(not the outdoors in real life :p), but there are Silt Striders in several towns which are similar to stables in Skyrim.

So I've done a bit now (played for a good chunk of time over the weekend). My thoughts so far:

Combat isn't really as bad as I thought. I hit more often than a low level BG character and I shouldn't have any real expectation that I would be a killing machine. Spells are fine so far in and out of combat.

Alchemy is tough. I finally got it to 15 so I could at least see what the first property of every ingredient does. I'm still "missing" more than "hitting" on making potions even though I can now make many potions (I didn't want to cheat by looking at an alchemy guide). Quick question - if I get a better quality mortar and pestle, does that increase my chances of success on making potions or does it just make better potions when I happen to succeed?

Carrying limits suck. Or heavy armor sucks. Or maybe it's both. I have less discretionary space than I want, so I might drop my heavy stuff and go with light armor.

Movement speed is painful! I think this is the biggest thing holding me back. FedEx quests take forever!

I am a member of all three trade guilds (Fighter, Mage and Thief). I suspect that there's going to be problems with this as it seems that the Thief and Fighter guilds might become mutually exclusive as things develop. I have no real feel for which I will pick if that were to come true.

I have a feeling that I am not making optimal leveling choices. I suppose that I don't care for this character as I am getting the feel for the game, but I also am not so sure that i am going to be able to stomach a second full playthrough at this game because of the slowness issue, so maybe I should care more.

    Oh well.

Edit: Couple more questions. Can I actually make armor like Skyrim or is it limited to just repairing what I find? Also, is enchanting as insanely overpowered in this game as in Skyrim?

Can't make your own armour afaik, enchanting super op as is alchemy. The stronger you get the more you can carry. The higher speed stat you have the faster you move. In many ways the ES games devolved after Morrowind which in many ways was way more complex than its descendants. You need high acrobatics to be able to jump decently.

It does start out a bit slow, but it gets really good after that. Since you don't like the slowness, you should increase your Speed. Once I played as an Assassin and after a while I enchanted my boots to restore my stamina and I got my speed to about 80 so I was running around like a crazy horse.

If memory serves right, joining all 3 guilds may cause some conflicts.

    Morrowind?

The sign of the steeds give 15 speed

Run Jump, swim, it all speeds up leveling. The are more ways to level quicker. I once used levitation en levitated me up to a boulder. I shot hundreds of arrow into beast, and man without being hit. they could not get to me.

I gave armoror many points with making the character. YOu will need to repair a lot. I decide to use light blade and gave it al littel as possible. Why If you give 40 to a skill you use all the time, it maxes out fast, slowing leveling. if you give it 10 and keep on usiing it, it make you level. it is gritting you teeth but halfway it pays off.

Nonsense. Morrowind has problems yes, which is a general thing with Bethesda games. But skyrim has way more problems then morrowind, almost at the level of Daggerfall (which was bug infested at time of release) Oblivion has alot of problems too (remember the falling orc in skingrad which prevents you from buying rosethorn hall) .
Magic weak in Morrowind? No, slow starting. Keep in mind that in Morrowind you start from zero, unlike Oblivion and Skyrim, where bethesda decided to give you superpowers already. Heck, you can even beat the mainquest in Oblivion at level 1. Try that in Morrowind and you're dead. Even Addamasartus is dangerous at level 1, the famous cave outside Seyda Neen. Magic and combat start slow in Morrowind. But as you get levels you get better. I'm playing now with a mage in Morrowind, an altmer mage with the atronach sign. 30+ and can beat a blighted nix-hound with just one fireball.
I wouldn't say that Oblivion is more streamlined. It is more casual. Well, the combat system in general is maybe better, but a downside from Oblivion is that it is too casual. It takes you by the hand, while in Morrowind you're on your own. Yes, Morrowind can be very unforgiving and frustrating at times. Overall Morrowind is more suited for those players who like the old sandbox games and don't mind to take time to develop the character.
